My VR6 Cabrio *UPDATED 28/04/2009*

Recommended Posts

Ok my car is kind of coming together now, dont know if it looks better or worse but i am happy with it at the moment, when i first bought the car it looked like this which i think was a nice look.

abc.jpg

After coming from a 315bhp E30 M3 BMW to a 1.8 75 or 95 bhp motor I truly believed I could cope with the loss in power and performance, but it was not to long before I started missing the power and found my new VW Golf gutless lol.

I started looking around on loads of sites for conversions to do, and the VR6 conversion seemed the most affordable for me to do, with the less hassle. I was given the choice of loads of engines from TT, R32, 1.8T etc, but I just wanted an engine with some power and no turbo's and chargers entering into the equation. This forum came highly recommended so I joined up.

I hunted around for breakers or cheap cars for sale and found one on here for a nice cheap price, even though it had high mileage I am not bothered as when the day comes and it dies I will rebuild and probably supercharge, but for now I just want to have a bit of fun.

Here it is, it needed a lot of body work due to rust, but drove 166 miles from Sheffield to London no problem, it was ideal for me to do the transplant. Please if anyone knows this car dont give me bad news lol.

And here is one with my mates VR6

I must admit I spent a lot of time driving this car before the conversion took place and at one stage felt sad knowing I was going to break it, but the conversion began. Prices started from £1500 to around £1700 but I managed to get the job done at half the price, and this was including the running gear etc.

so,

and then, (camera phone so picture quality is poor)

First things first, I decided to give the car a service which I done myself, being, new oil, plugs, leads, oil filter, air filter and replace and top up all liquids. I had a misfire which once the service was complete disappeared. I love the sound the VR6 engine makes and done some research and ended up buying a Carbonio Air Induction Kit, which I also fitted myself with a friend.

I know the CAI is not the loudest system but it sounds good to me and I love it.I have also bought a new head gasket but have decided not to do that yet until it is necessary.

Right next on my list was my ICE, now I know some of you might say why do you need boom, boom, when you have the sweet sound of the engine to listen to, but once upon a time I use to fit ICE as a hobby in my spare time, so I have always been into my sounds. I was also a deejay once and love all types of music. As for the screens I do have two kids, who do watch them, so they are not for show, and I get crazy looks as I drive down the road playing the clap your hand song LOL.

All my ICE, which consists of a Pioneer DVD head unit, x 2 Directed Electronics 6.5†screens, Directed Electronics 6500 Parametric EQ, Audio Leads Universal Bass Knob, x 1 Directed Electronics 1100D Mono block Amp, x 2 Rockford Fosgate Amps, Mutant 5 Farad Power Cap, x 1 15†L5 Kicker Sub, excluding my Pioneer components came out of my E30 BMW, so I did not have to buy a thing and it would have been a shame to have sold it all. I Only have pictures of the screens will update other pictures of the ICE when I get a chance.

Next on my list is to put my new rims on, and then next year I might get the car leathered, and the paint work touched up, but I will update the thread as i go along. but this is my little project so far and has taken five months to do, with minimal costs.

Nearly forgot lol, I have added new shocks and lowering springs (40mm) and i have a full set of power flex bushes all round to go on, just need to find someone who has a press machine locally to me to do them, so i have been told anyway.

impressed got any pictures of your ice install also how did you do the 5 stud conversion did you wide trac the car???

Will get some pictures of the ICE' date=' but to be honest its not that fancy, in fact its quite bland, the components are hidden by the spaeker covers, the EQ is in the glove box, so the only thing on show is the head unit, screens and bass knob, but i will take some of the box in the boot, might try to jazz it up a bit next year lol.

on the subject of the 5 stud conversion, it was done by a personal friend so i have no idea what you mean by wide trac the car??? i thought it was a straight swap, with a little mod here and there. obviously not lol.

if you can explain what you mean, i can find out for you, i do know that when i dropped the rear of the car i got stuck on three different speed humps and it was bloody embarassing. the insdie of the tyres were rubbing and now i have these beauties, that i know wont fit. all four are 17 x 8.5, might be up for sale soon.

They arrived today but i have a feeling without some arch rolling and pulling they wont be going on.

wide track is were the wheels stick out more than it should i got a charged vr6 highline and got a golf mk3.5 cabrio colour concept run-a-round which i had changed to 5 stud as i wanted to put bigger brakes but had loads of grief with it done it in the end but had to get the original brake disks re-drilled to 5x100

any boot rattling with the ice install??

whats the handling with a vr in the cab as i got a mk2 vr that i am breaking and been thinking about doing the swap

Oh ok, when i collected the car everything he said was a straight swap, the only problem i had which you can probably see from the pictures above before i lowered the car, the front was higher than the rear, and the car drove like a boat in a storm, if i hit a bump or a ditch in a road, the car would bounce all over the place. going round corners sometimes felt like i was driving on oil, since the lowering and new shocks, it handles perfect.

The wheels i have above are 5x100 but i know when i put them on tomorrow they will stick out pass the arches as the standard BBS are not that far off.

Loads of boot rattling with the ICE install, but i have put dynamat all aroound the boot lid on the inside and also put a a cut of dynamat the same size as the number plate, behind the number plate, along with double sided tape. this has cut down the rattling about 90%.But with a 15" sub its not to bad.

My missus has the same car and had a 12" sub and i think due to the higher frequency it rattled like crazy, but now she has also swapped to a 15" L5 kicker sub, the rattling has calmed down.

The handling i must say is ok, but i sometimes find if i try to do a sharp turn i have to slow right down or i might end up going pass the turning lol.

One of my mates has a VR6 OBD1 and the other a BMW Alpina 327i, in a straight line i have them worried, either that or they are making me feel good about my car lol. but even owning a E30 M3 Cabrio with an M5 engine pushing out 315bhp and being rear wheel drive, as my last car i prefer and enjoy my VR6 Cabrio a lot more and actually look forward to driving it a lot more than i did with the BM.

Oh well today is a sad day had my wheels delivered this week and guess what, they dont fit, well the front ones dont anyway, they touch the caliper and leave a space of 20mm or more. gonna purchase some spacers but i believe they will stick out to far, so looks like they will be up for sale.

I did manage to get one wheel on the back, but i had to remove the plastic centre from the wheel and line up the holes. Dont worry did not drive anywhere just pushed it forward and backward, but i will defo need some arch work if the sapcers work out.

in case your wondering the wheels are 17 x 8.5 all round, with 205/40/R17 tyres at ET13

BAD NEWS

I have not been on here for a while as I have been a bit disheartened as i did not know the situation with my car in regards to whether or not it was going to be a write off or the third party insurers would agree to repair it.

By the way Merry Xmas to all and a happy new year in 2009.

A BIG APOLOGY to all those who I was making contact with to take parts and other bits. I had to pull out as i did not know where i stood. But i have been told by my repair garage that an engineer came out at last, last week and viewed the car and agreed to repair it, the front and the back, so hopefully everything will be done in the New Year.

About three months ago a girl drove straight into the back of my car while i was stationary in traffic and pushed me into the back of another car which had no damage whatsoever. i got sandwiched between these cars and was a little unhappy.

The driver who i hit she was cool and gave me her details as a witness, but the girl who hit me, well, all i can say is it happened in Brixton, London and after a couple of conversations she turned out to be a nice person also, especially when the damage was estimated by her repairer as a write off or £500 repair for her at a special price,.and not the £20 job and T Cut she told me it would be. LOL.

does not look bad in the pictures but trust me it is.

front not to bad £150 for a new grill and fogs

Rear: Now the rear is the bad part like i said the pictures dont help but she hit me in the rear so hard it pushed out the drivers side rear quarter panel, so some jig work is invovled, i need a new rear bumper, and boot lid as it is dented, and the boot will not close due to everything being out of line.

Like i said hopefully in the new year i will get the car back and can carry on with my project.

GOOD NEWS

Not sure if this is good news for any of you, due to the CC and thats the credit crunch and not the congestion charge, but i will be working along side a garage who at present are developing a VR6 supercharger kit with my car up as the tester. Work wont begin until the new year maybe around FEB or MAR and once completed i will put pictures up of the build and so on. I will try to list everything that is done and the price. I know to some this is probably old news but i am working off a budget here and trying to get maximum results for little cash so once completed we will see if its any good.

Anyone who is interested and has more knowledge of the kind of work that goes into this kind of thing, once work commences please feel free to ask any questions, as if the kit is something you want and is the right price, you are going to want to know everything, and my knowledge is minimal and i am relying 100% on the mechanics word and work.

I Have been browsing the forum quickly when I get the chance as i have been madly busy at work which has now gone quiet in the last three weeks so i decided to take same time out and do some work on my motor, so far i have fitted in the last year:

Before Crash:

new suspension 35mm Drop

Carbonio System

Full ICE system

Then pow and wallop lol, since the repairs i have fitted,

New rims

had my arches done by Archenemy

tried out a bit of diy spray work on my engine cover

fitted my hose kit

fitted INXX bonnet lifters

repaired my dodgy head light bulbs

fitted a second hand black leather interior

oh and i took a visit to Top Gear in St Albans and had a new exhaust system fitted as my one had blown

Things left to do

complete fitting of strut brace.

complete installation on my Noz kit so far i have ran only the hose lol

source a blue roof, not needed but i think it will make the car look better

fit my powerflex bushes after six months the rears turned up two weeks ago

and possibly have

one garage fitting a supercharger, and another retrimming my interior for promotional purposes so fingers crossed as it should not cost me anything. I think after my dodgy spray work i will get some one else to finish off my engine bay but here are some pics, not great but all i have.

Cabrioman: not charged yet but hopefully soon will be once my mechanic can fit me in, reckons it will be a straight forward job i will wait and see

VW Mike: The charger they are looking to use is goinbg to be i think either a bahn brenner or lysholm (hope i have spelt them right), apparantly they are meant to be really good, i dont have a clue. they have nearly finished a kit for the VR Engines, my car is going to be the tester, so it might be a bang oh now wot for me also or maybe i will be promoting the kit.

As for the retrim, the guy doing my one i designed and maintain, update and look after his website but he is very good on his prices try him out, not the best website in the world as i am a self trained novice, but it does the job.

http://www.autoleatherinteriors.co.uk/index.html

Jonny boy: Archenemy paid me a visit this week and rolled the last part of the arch that was rubbing, i still need to have a bit cut out, then its body shop time to get out the ripples and stuff. By the way i am 100% sure i saw you up Enfiled last weekend, in what was a very packed car park, full of some serious metal and loads of police, i was parked up near the homebase but did not move as i had dodgy head lights and the police where rolling around i think looking for cars to book lol. It was the most cars i have ever seen at Enfield.

Just remembered also i still have not fitted the strut brace i bought from you either, but i did drill the holes, hopefully i will complete fitting this week if i can get off my PS3.
