numbnuts 0 Posted October 2, 2008 Report Share Posted October 2, 2008 Just got back from my 1st blat out in the car. Yep it's fast! Drives nice and handles very well but..... Where is all the power below 3500rpm? There not much at all which is surprising seeing as it's a 2.8 V6. Above 3500 rpm it pulls quite well and the power is progressive which is good. You really have to keep the revs up to keep the power there which is fine on a track but next to useless on the roads unless you want to loose your licence.So the verdict is pretty disappointed to be honest. For me the power is too far up the rev range. I would have liked it to come in much earlier. Is there anything I can do about this like ECU re-mapping? At the end of the day i would probably prefer a turbo diesel which has the power from the word go which on normal roads for me would be much more fun. I drove a new Golf diesel GT last year which blew me away! The VR6 is no where near as much fun.hey ho. Link to post Share on other sites
H13VYY 0 Posted October 2, 2008 Report Share Posted October 2, 2008 tbh the only way you would get the low down power that your looking for is by going down the FI route. you have to remember the VR is over 10 years old..therefore comparing it with the golf gt which has something like 240 lbs/ft torque..you will feel that extra pull low down the rev range which the VR doesn't give. Ben Seabrook 4 Posted October 2, 2008 Report Share Posted October 2, 2008 You have to remember that the VR was never designed as a hot hatch more a motorway cruiser but saying that 0-60 in about 7 seconds is still pretty quick even by todays standards inmo it's a very rev hungry engine and needs pushing especially at low speeds to get the best out of a standard car. Take it out again and dont change up gears so quick think you might find you have a different car on your hands. Also diesels always feel quicker at lower speeds but trust me from personal experience a diesel GT has nothing on a VR Link to post Share on other sites

H13VYY 0 Posted October 2, 2008 Report Share Posted October 2, 2008 i was drving my mates audi a4 tdi sportline yday..it has140bhp with 236 lbs/ft torque..which is the same power as the golf gt you had..yeh it has a lovely drive, low down power, comfort but it's no where near as fun as the VR. Older cars are way more fun..newer cars are just more comfortable, economical and mature so to speak.The VR should make you feel 17 again not the Golf GT! Link to post Share on other sites

Eat this 2 Posted October 2, 2008 Report Share Posted October 2, 2008 dont get me wrong theyr a better car than the vr iv got both lol im sellin the vr to supercharge the r32 475-490 hp when its done but it just isnt as special as the vr6 it doesnt sound as good for a startregarding the throttle response vw deliberatly made it incredibly twitchy to give the illusion of immense power ie 2% throttle = about 90% power its hideous imho the only good thing about it is heel and toe (i turn my feet outwards not inwards like everybody else does) is fantastic with it bein so twitchy but for driving normally its horrible sooooo easy to kangaroo down the road Link to post Share on other sites
