Somebody help. i'm running out of ideas!!

Recommended Posts

Rough idle, lumpy and inconsistent through the rev range from around 2500/ 3000rpm on, real flat power delivery, not boosting properly, seems to be overfuelling. Idles fine with MAF disconnected and revs ok until 3000rpm as one would expect.

Vortech V1 with 70mm pulley, 4"MAF, 440cc green tops, 6 branch, 4" K&N.

I have replaced MAF with genuine new one, renewed the blue temp sensor, renewed the plugs with high temp ones, replaced the coilpack with another used one, new leads (500 miles ago), checked and double checked for air leaks both sides of charger, checked wiring to MAF, checked throttle position sensor, disconnecting the lambda made no difference - could this be the problem?

None of the above has had any or little impact. When I first started the car I discovered I had the maf in the wrong way round but was soon rectified. Dunno if that will mean anything but trying to put as much info down as possible.

Apart from lamba, could compression be a problem, as in too high? Could really do with some advice or/and hear from somebody that has or has had similar problems.

really need to get it on a vag com mate and see if there are any fault codes .... that would help big time

I know mate, have vag-com and lead but can't get it to work, apparently it's incompatible with Vista unless you buy an encrypted lead from Ross-Tech! I did get it on my mates one on Sunday but the only code it fired up was engine misfire. Didi't look into it any further at that time cos we were at a show.

what pressure is it running? the injectors seem abit big even wound right back' date=' reds would be better

did set up on the rollers not show anything?

It's running standard 3bar. Put the greens in because they're matched to the C2 software and because I wanted to put an 11 or 14psi pulley on once i'm up and running. However, it was dumping that much fuel in the other night that I could see the top of the piston soaking wet with fuel when I was renewing the plugs!

running anything more than 10psi, i would personally lower the compression

how much boost is it running now?

how much boost is the software designed to run?

what fuel pressure is the software designed to run?

440cc is a hell of alot of fuel, more common on turbo setups

Think i'm supposed to be running 8psi if everything was running ok. Don't know what i'm running at the minute as i've no boost gauge.

gethin postr the vag com codes omn here..i now one was engine misfire detected..and i could remember the others..

is the car obd1/2 , has it always been a vr? ,when did the fault start..like i said before , sometimes you have to work backwards, even if it means refitting all the old kit.. but if youve done everything we talked about, then maybe the ecu's having a bad day ?? but im sure c2 can help you with that.

Cheers Jim, know what the other ones were ok. Car is OBD2 and is an original VR.

I now have the car running a lot better than it was. First of all there was a boost leak where the pipe joins the throttle body, then I closed the gap to 0.5mm on the plugs and then I pushed the plug leads on tighter by slipping the metal bit on the end of the lead up a bit. It is still giving the odd miss down the revs and is impossible to hold a steady rev whilst driving at normal cruise speed, eg; 50mph at say 2500 rpm. I am getting 0.7/0.8 bar of boost but sometimes experiencing a bit of pinking around the 4500/5000 rpm mark. This may be due to too high a compression? It is still overfuelling as the plugs are as black and as sooty as the inside of a power station chimney. Can't explain the other but I am getting somewhere. C2 are doing their best to get me sorted.

Not sure about the timing, the thought has crossed my mind. I have the lend a jig from my local dealer to check it. Is there any way of checking it on vag-com? I'm told there is only one sensor on one of the camshafts so if it were out on the camshaft with no sensor the only way to check it is mechanically? Is this correct? Would this cause pinking as well, wouldn't have thought so myself? It's more the undrivability that is annoying me, the fact that you can't maintain a steady speed the way the throttle is hunting on and off.

i m sure if you look at the measuring blocks you could tell from there..youd just need to know what it should be , then have a look at what it is ...im sure its around 12btdc , but i may be wrong..and 5 btdc stick in my mind for some reason :o

Have you tried a known working MAF?

I certain I've heard people muttering about MAFs dying if they are run the wrong way round?!?!

2nd this... Isn't a nice easy way of checking if the MAF is mullered is to disconnect it. If it runs better with it disconnected then that points towards replacing the MAF, Disconnect it and see what happens
