kniterider 0
howdy folks, on my 3rd vr6 now, all has been well till a week ago, had a slight splutter for a few seconds on the way home from work, then all seemed well, then when i started the car 4 days later it ran like a bag o crap!! wont tick over, coughing / spluttering etc, now ive used the search function and read loads on here (as i had a similar probs with my 92 vr6 a few years ago) , i put new leads and plugs in 2 months ago, theyve been fine, i removed the plugs to see what there like and they are so black and choked up im supprised they worked at all, so i put my old plugs back in and it ran the same... crap!!, now for the plugs to get that black surely its seriously over fueling?? which kinda point me towards maf fault?? but then ive noticed a hairling crack in the plastic of the coil pack, but cant see any arcing etc at night... i dont wanna spend on a maf if its the coil pack and vice versa!! so any ideas or what else it could be?? (was dogey wiring on maf sensor plug on my 92 misfire problem but wiring ok on this one)
sticks 0
hi try to repair the crack on coil pack with resin or super sillicon and see what happens before you buy another ,also try your old leads and give your maf and throttle body a clean only takes 10 mins, all else fails get it on the computer normally tells you if serious, good luck
craggsy 91
Id go with MAF myself, but as sticks says try repairing coilpack first. Id go with a resin adhesive or something like that. I gotta do mine and I have seen that B&Q sell it in a shringe type thing with the hardener
kniterider 0
one other thing i noticed this morning , the car has always heated up quickly a couple of mins running and warm air through vents etc, now this is still the same but the temp guage is taking a good 10 mins of running before it gets upto the 90 degree mark on the dash, ive read somewhere about temp senders failing and causing severe over fueling and stuff cause the ecu thinks the engine is still stone cold and fuels accordingly???? craggsy, ive cleaned the maf with solent spray in case it was dirty etc, if i goto my local independant vw people and get them to clear all fault codes then run it round the block will fault codes for maf / temp sender show?? craggsy 91
should do
ip 0
Doesn't sound like an ignition problem to me. Wouldn't account for overfueling. Much more likely to be MAF or Lambda sensor. When I removed my MAF (to debug something else) mine wouldn't tiockover and behaved much like you describe. I take it you don't have a vag-com set up?
kniterider 0
nah i had to drive 15 miles to get them to see what faults, i havent been back yet, as i suspected i popped out half hour ago, ran fine for 5 mins then when off a couple of cylinders again..... ive got a blue temp switch on the way and gonna sort a lamba sensor , then it will be maf and coil pack... in otherwords very flippin expensive,,, not happy... ip 0
I have a working MAF which another guy on the forum has expressed an interest in. If he doesn't bite then it is yours for £30 plus postage? It's very clean and only saw three months use. It's a bosch reconditioned unit that I bought to fix a missfire. Turned out there was nothing wrong with the original so I put it back on.
kniterider 0
will let you know tomorrow evening mate, ive got a friend 10 miles away who has a highline so im going to try his maf then coil pack to see if either of them cures the problem, if they do then i know what i have to buy, no spare cash at mo to be buying 'it could be this' items!! kniterider 0
well tried a maf, made no difference, tried a mates coilpack and bingo was running smooth on all 6 cylinders, have just got one thats being delivered hopefully thursday.... im going to disconnect my battery once the car is parked up later tonight to clear ecu etc, then hopefully when new pack arrives she should be back to normal...its cylinders 6 and one that aint firing, and there run off the part of the coilpack nearest the radiator, surely theres got to be a better cheaper way of sorting these coilpacks as there onl;y 3 twin units in a case!! kniterider 0
new coil pack arrived, fitted it and she fired up straight away, did a 30 odd mile run and seemed ok if a bit lumpy at tickover (will put new plugs in tomorrow and my newest set of leads again), cleaned exhaust before hand as was black from problems, now black again so either its burning /blowing the crap outta the cat/system or its got a fueling problem (maf/lamba/temp switch) as well... at least it will get me to work now, will do some bits tomorrow then run it for the week then take it to garage to see if any fault codes etc... at least its running and quick again!! kniterider 0
well , it ran crap after posting this... so i left it for a couple of weeks and brought a rover 220 diesle bubble car for work... lol... had lamba turn up. and temp sensor, and then a maf ( lamba 99p , temp sensor £7.65 , maf £15 ) lol... fittedn temp sensor 1st and still same froma cold start, then fitted Maf and it was instant, started, ticked over etc.now runs 100% better, sold the rover and made £100 too, , seems to be doing about 300 miles to £50 worth of fuel, cat smells a bit so will get the lamba swapped also and see if that makes any diffo to smell and any more miles to £50 worth... lol... i cant understand why me coilpack and maf would both funk up at the same time and give me so much grief!! oh well cured and using as my daily again... (never gonna do 300 miles on £30 of fuel like that rover did but at least i dont need a paper bag on me head in the vr)....lol
