BenW16 0
yes its one of those stupid questions again! got me paws on a set of 16's gona fit this wkend, just wanted to know if 205/55/16's will go sraight on or will they rub??
tommy 0
Not sure but ive got 205-50-15...if you go for 16s would have thought you'd have to have a 45 profile tyre as the rr is going to be greater on a 55 profile...if the car is standard ride ht i wouldn't think it will make much difference....imo that is! BenW16 0
so can i fit any size profile? was more worried bout the width tho mate, turning n cornering maybe a problem? and obvioulsy the price aswell!!

[/quote']No you can't Fit any profile tyre......as a rough guide-15inch=50 profile16inch=45 profile17inch=40 profileA 205 tyre will go on no problem as thats what the vr's run standard...i think you can run a 215 tyre as long as the cars not to low but i've known people to have problems with this width tyre! BenW16 0
Tommy, thanks matey. c u at the rr day!
dubloke 4
yeah tell me about width, i got 215/40/17 on my rs4 reps and the outside rear walls scrubs like a dog over bumpy surfaces!
ukdub 0
on the mk3 anniversary they had a 16" wheel with 215/40/16 fitted as standard not sure on the offset of the wheels though. think it was
BenW16 0
What does the offset mean? can u alter it by means of tracking, ie setting camber etc? or is it a non changeble thing, like the way the wheel is shaped or moulded?
dubloke 4
the offset is the distance fron the inner face of the wheel to the outer face, the smaller the number the bigger the offset, if i remember it correctly! have to have an offset close to the original to stop rubbing the arch/inner arch/susension legs etc. unless you like using spacers that is, i dont think they are overly safe myself!
BenW16 0
suppose beta get the tape out then mate! But what about the tracking tho, will this be afected?
binliner 0
if you look straight on at the tyre tread and imagine a line down the middle of it, the offset is the distance between that line and the wheels mounting face... the lower the number the further the wheel sticks out basicallyThe only way its adjustable is by adding spacers .... does that make sense?!
BenW16 0
yeah makes sense, but im gona get confusing now! how would i know the offset on a set of alloys with no tyres on em? would i just halve the distance on the alloys and compair to the ones on the car with tyres? does that make sense?!
binliner 0
you dont need tyres on them its the centre line of the wheel thats important
binliner 0
maybe I didnt explain it very well &|
BenW16 0
nah dont worry mate! The thing is ive got standard BBS's on the car and got a set of 16's off a new GTI-T. Just wanted to know what the ofset maybe(vw were bloody useless and didnt av a clue) , so now i can measure the distance like you said and find out. Just did'nt want to fork out money for tyres and find that the wheels dont fit or the offset may cause a problem!
dubloke 4
the offset is generally on the inside of the wheel for vw standard wheels! have a peek at the inner rim or where the wheel bolts to the hub! or if there is a centre cap on the front its sometimes in there! VR6Steve 0
On the factory BBS its on the front of the wheel. ET43 springs to mind from yesterdays cleaning session.
BenW16 0
The new wheels that ive got say ET42, Will i get any problems when these wheels go on? If so what ? Thanks peeps. Ben
antera309 3
I run 205/40 R17 with 7.5x17" wheels and lowered suspension and there's no rubbing, even with 2 people in the back. They do run very close to the arch though - rear wheel alignment has to be spot on.[ Edited Wed Feb 18 2004, 10:21AM ]
