I have a VR6 with high milage, and it has recently developed a faint rattle at 1800 - 2000 rpm. Some days there is no noise, other days it's there. Most noticable when accelerating.

Dosen't matter if it's hot or cold.

Could there be any other cause but timing chain ?

Maybe something like a noise in the crank case ventilation system ?

I would hate to do the chains and find it was something simple I had overlooked.

Mine started as a rattle - thought it was chains. Turned out to be big end bearing slowly disintergrating - just forked out for a new engine - my advice - get it checked by a specilist (not main dealer from my experience). Worth spending 2 hours labour to find out.

OK, thanks guys:

1.so my next question is how do I judge which chains need to be replaced ?

2. And what about the chain tensioners, how will I know if they need replacing ?

3. And the chain sprokets. If the chain is stretched/worn, wouldn't the the sprokets become out of spec too ?

4. And last wuestion, can I remove the chain cover without taking the head off ?

ok, its usually the tensioners or runners that break, not the chains themselves. but by the tensioners/runners breaking the chain can jump teeth. the sprokets should be fine.

the problem is that only one runner and the bolt tensioner are the only things that can be replaced without removing gearbox (if you go to that effort you may as well change everything to be safe)

you can check on the condition of some of them without removing the head. you have to remove the inlet manifold, coilpack, cam cover, then the upper chain cover (after taking bolt tensioner out back, which may need bleeding before refitting). with a torch you should be able to see if theres anything nasty going on lower down.

Going to get my chains done in the next couple of weeks as the dreaded rattle is starting - car has only done 102000 miles ~:(

Been quoted 8 hours labour to do the job - im getting a new clutch fitted whilst the box is out - be silly not to.

Was thinking about doing the job myself as ive got a garage full of tools and a hoist but tbh i cant be bothered crawling round underneath a car for the sake of £250 labour 8)

Im too old for that now :P

Cars booked in the Monday after Stealth 8)

Pete.
