Turbo engine chatter,, is it safe?

Recommended Posts

Ive got a vrturbo its got an external wastegate on it, when i bought it i fwas told that when i disconnect the dump valve i would have a chatter instead of a plain old dump. Ive heard a few comments about this how it is bad on the turbo. But i hear a few cars flying around near where i live and hear their turbo'd engines chattering away. A mate of mine has a gsi turbo and he hasnt had a dump valve connected since he got it about 12 months ago and it doesnt seem to do his much harm.

Just wanna know what all you guys think or know!! :D cheers

No doubt turbo boys will be around soon but what I know is that different engines/cars/turbos will operate differently to DV etc. Take the 1.8T from VW they are recirculating DVs and wont work properly on stock management dump to atmosphere.

Thats how i have read it on other forums

When you say disconnect the DV, do you mean that the excess boost when you come off throttle has no way of recirculation or venting to the atmosphere? If thats the case its very hard on the turbo and the chatter is the compressor stalling/coming to a very sudden stop

Many customers pay good money to get that "cha cha cha" noise, which they've read on the internet is "Wastegate chatter" and think it's cool. Top name tuner or not, they're unlikely to turn down a wedge of cash if that's what the customer wants.

Turbos are now less fragile and longer lasting than they used to be, but compressor surge is still bad and should be avoided.

Wastegate "chatter", is when the valve (external WG) or gate (internal WG) "flutters" (bounces open / closed continuously) when the spring pressure and boost pressure almost equalise on partial boost conditions. I.e. Not quite enough boost pressure in the signla line to push the valve open, and not enough spring pressure to keep it closed, if that makes sense?

The noises associate with closing the throttle quickly are absolutely nothing to do with the wastegate what so ever!! I think it's just one of those myths that worked it's way into the mainstream from rallying etc...

Dump valves just let off a psshhhht noise. The smaller the valve and opening, the noisier and chavvier it will sound. A nice big TIAL 50mm DV is barely audible until it's venting off a big amount of boost, which is rare at low rpms.

Recircs are usually always silent in OE applications, but some have little resonances, a kind of metallic squawk. You often hear subarus with uprated recircs make that noise when closing the throttle.

where does this chatter noise come from kev if it aint the external wastegate? I know alot of people think its chavy but i like it and im one of those people who does what they like with there motor lol ( and i dont mean i cover it with halfords mods i am very much into the scene and have been for years and love it!)

thanks xyber might try one of those as i think my dump valve isnt workin properly. And how can a noise from a turbo'd engine be 'chavy'? its like saying chavs have dump valves so there chavy :s

I think what Kev is saying is that chavs put devices like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Blow-Off-BOV-Turbo-Sound-Ford-Escort-Fiesta-Mondeo-KA_W0QQitemZ220341644435QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item220341644435&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1299%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 on their cars to give a loud dump valve esq noise !!

Dunno, I've never heard WG chatter on mine :-) Try googling it. I can't hear my WG open when driving or a change in exhaust note when it opens, so I have no reason to believe I would hear it 'chattering' either. I suspect if you had an open WG dump pipe (aka screamer pipe) you'd certainly hear it!

So you actually want the compressor stalling noises, despite the fact we've told you it's unhealthy for the turbo? Fair enough, LOL!

It's worse the closer to or further beyond the specs of the turbo you are running too... Your classic "jap tuner" maxes out the turbo to get a nice high power figure for impressing people at the pub - turbo's are cheap and horsepower is cool... or something.

On the subject of the noise of recirc valves... mine's a normal forge recirc jobby that everyone sticks on their 20vts and it's noisey as hell!

i want me a squirrel mincer lol. Nah im not going to do it if its bad for my car. Just puzzles me that alot of people get this noise from there turbo'd cars and wanted to know how. That link for top gear the 'P2' sounds mad!! jeremey clarkson there with his bang on quotes lol
