With payday being tomorrow, I'm on the hunt for an exhaust system for my car to compliment the roar from my RamAir. I had planned on getting a Milltek Twin Jet cat back system which my local tuner would supply and fit for £299.

However, I've heard some bad reports about the Milltek systems, and have been advised that Supersprint are far better and give a better note. My local tuner also supplies Supersprint although i've not got a quote from them on one of those yet.

Anyone had any experiences, good or bad, of either, or even both?

Also, I've never had a car with a cat before and i'm not too clued up on what they're all about. I think i'm right in thinking that they restrict the flow and reduce performance, but are needed for an MOT. If I got a cat bypass pipe (I assume that these go on in place of the cat), how easy is it to swap it over for the cat and back again when it comes to MOT time?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I've had Magnex, Scorpion and Powerflow exhausts in the past and haven't been impressed with any of them, so want to make sure I get it right this time.

Slim

I've had both a Supersprint and Milltek system.

If i had to choose between them i'd go for Supersprint everytime. I'd say the note from the Milltek is deeper, but fitment wise the SUpersprint wins hands down.

With regards to decat pipes, i have a Supersprint decat and i can't fault it.

They are straight forward to swop, 3 bolts and the Oxygen sensor.

MOT wise, it's not a MOT failure if your car doesn't have a CAT, but on the emissions. If you're running a decat pipe and your emissions pass the MOT test, then your car can't be failed....if that makes sense.

The CAT itself is very restrictive. Removing the CAT will cause a drop in back pressure which may lead to a drop in torque, but you should increase your bhp slightly....swings and roundabouts really ;)

Slim, i would go for a custom made one, i went to RMS in Prestwick, but i hear that sounds of silence near edinburgh is good to.

Mines is de-catted and its dead easy to fit it back in, as they modify it so it fits perfectly. have got my mot just now and the garage have said they would put the cat in do the mot and take it out again for an extra tenner, saves me getting dirty doing it.

On mine also they built a box where the cat should be and this has kept the noise down to a nice rumble

I'm not too keen on the custom ones, had a bad experience with a Powerflow and I know of a few other people in the same boat who got their's from a different outlet.

I like the comfort of knowing that the exhaust I've bought is designed for my car and hs been tailor made to fit my car instead of someone bending some bits of universal pipework to fit.

Or maybe i'm just a snob. Got my mind made up on the Supersprint now I think, going down to Star Performance on Sunday for a rolling road day so I'll have a word with the guys down there, they quoted me £299 to supply and fit a Milltek when the cheapest I could find it elsewhere was £285 delivered.

Ive got a Miltek on mine and cant fault it - fitting was easy once i got the old system off (pain in the arse :o ) - the sound is lovely - not too noisy but loud enough to make a difference over standard.

The quality of the Miltek is superb - very neat welds and polished boxes and nice pipe bends 8)

For £299 fitted i dont think you can go wrong.

Supersprint are nice but very expensive - over £400 the last time i looked without fitting - some of the tailpipes leave a little to be desired to - very large and chavish B) - i seem to recall that John who recently had his Supersprint fittted by Tommy had lots of fitment problems ?!

Hope this helps 8)

Pete.

Powerflow are a franchise so the quality of the work depends largely on who does it. Imo you've got it the wrong way round, their strength is in the fact that they are custom made to fit each car (and the choice of tailpipes)... I think my Powerflow fits as well if not better than anything else Ive seen on a mk3.

Saying that I dont think the materials powerflow use are of the same quality as some others... you won't go wrong with a Supersprint

Well I know that Powerflow don't use TIG welds on their products like most off the shelf manufacturers do, and there's always a danger of corners being cut with custom ones.

My friend put his Corrado into our local Powerflow dealer, they cut his downpipe in half and welded the exhaust onto there, and it was one long pipe with no sleeves and as it went over the rear axle, it would be impossible to get it off. They also threw his heatshield in the skip because they couldn't get it to fit with it on.

He's been back with it a few times and it's still not right.

The Powerflow one I had rusted through completely on the pipe that goes from the rear silencer to the sleeve to the middle pipe bit, I tapped it firmly against my knee and it crumbled, and that was after about 8 months and because i'd removed it myself, the people who fitted said my lifelong warranty was void.

If I can get a Supersprint for a reasonable amount, I think I'll go with that, i'd rather pay a bit more and be confident with what I've got.

No wonder your not going for a custum one, mine is superb quality made in marine grade stainless steel (dad says its the easiest grade to work with) and i can't fault it and neither can my dad. took a while to get it done but was well worth it, also it has a lifetime guarantee.
