OMG - Annoying VR6 service woes

Recommended Posts

Had a right 'mare before!!

Picked up oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, and get oil. "only take me an hour or so" I tell the wife as I drop her off shopping. How wrong could I be?

OK, so I fit the air filter first. Had to remove the MAF pipe from either end so I could get the top of the airbox. A little trickier than it looked. That took me about 20 mins. Job done.

Next, you guys says not to use an engine flush, so I decided to drain the oil whilst hot so it runs off easier. I ran into probems right away. Jack doesnt fit under the car :S So, finds a brick to drive onto. Jacks her up, goes to my shed for my axle stands.............. and then remembers they are in the back of my clio 9 miles away :@ Balls, I will do it on the jack.

So, up she goes and I go under, catching my chest on the splitter on the way, pulling that off. 19MM socket on the sump nut, turn to the left, and BANG...... thum on the sump, real hard |-)

So, throbbing thumb, I undo the nut and drop the oil into the waiting tray. Great stuff. Now, where is that oil filter?? Considering I am used to Fords and Renaults, I could see what looked like a filter, but it had a 36mm nut on the end, so can't be that right? 20mins of searching and no manual later, I opened the new oil filter box, to realise it was. DOH!! Undo that and fit the new one. Sump plu in and 5litres dropped in.

Time for the plugs........ with no removal tool. Pieceof piss yes?

Front 3 off, no probs. Plugs swapped, leads back on, or so I thought. My mate tugs each one and they just fall off :o So, after some "adjusting" with a driver, they all fit on. Time for the back 3. Left bank, no probs. Right bank, no probs. Middle plug lead pulls off fine............... but leaves the boot on the plug.

*Cue lots of swearing and tools thrown up the driveway*

Long nose pliers will not fit in the hole given in the plastic, can't remove plastic cover as spline tools are nustled up next to the axle stands, and can't get my fat hands under the throttle/inlet. 1 hour it took me. ONE F**KING HOUR!!!!

Finally got it off, pulled the lead off the coil pack, superglue the outer part of the lead, pop it on, leave it to dry. 20mins later, pop it on, and fire her up.

Purrs like a dream. WINNER!! :):):)

I did a little dance, and spilt my hot brew on my hand, lol.

Then the wife rings, is ready to be picked up. So, I dropped another litre of oil into it, and packed my tools up. I will do the fuel filter and gear oil next week. So, await the next saga ;)

trust me its not much easyer when u are a mechanic some days . maybe people can appreciate why it cost so much to have a service and u didn't even have the wheels off u what till u spend half an hour trying to get one wheel of them off because the last bloke to look at the car didn't know how to use a drop of copper lube .
