Ben Seabrook 4
done plugs and leads. and checked maf condition. but dunno how to clean it as its delicate and im club handed. lol. get some electrical contact cleaner and just give it a good spray let it dry for a few mins and then stick it back on - don't try and tack it out of the housing !!! especially if you are, like me, club handed mine was doing the same thing and doing these has pretty much cleared it up the next thing to change is the lambda sensor for me
craggsy 91
Yours is OBD1 so try ISV
gavinvr6 0
lamba is only 12 months old. but thinking along the lines of lambda could it be that my centre piep to cat connection is blowing slightly?? will this cause the lambda to miss read and cock things up? i did have a good butchers at the maf last week when i done plugs leads and checked for leaks and it looks ok to me. not gunked up or nothing. but i'll give the contact cleaner thing a go and see what happens. i also cleaned the cam senser whilst i was in there. but that was spotless anyway bar a few splashes of oil.does anyone know where i can get an obd1 fault code reader/wiper??? or a lead to change an obd2 reader to an obd1?? thegoth 5
relay 67 is the fuel pump relay
gavinvr6 0
craggsy.. first thing i tried was isv, this was practically scrubbed clean and moves very smoothly. i also used carb cleaner to clean the sounderbox thingy it connects to, then fitted new clips and also fitted em to pipes that never had em before just to be sure.thanks gordon, recently checked pump and its not dying when the revs dive and pick up again. but will replace that relay since it didnt do it before the prob started and certainly shouldnt be clicking like a cricket on coke. The Monk 50
Your exhaust blowing will not be causing it to stall or jump. So that's one problem gone.......though it will affect your power and mpg slightly.
gavinvr6 0
supprisingly i see 27mpg up to london the other day lol. im hopefully doing the exhaust monday so thats that off the list.does anyone know where i can get an obd1 code reader/remover, even ebay dont list any, just the adaptor cable to use on an obd2 reader
DreadedDev 0
have similar problem started recently - particularly bad tonight on the way home when the air (outside) was very hot (30 degrees). It starts fine and idles okay to begin with but once it gets hot It starts to die you come off the revs and after about 2000 revs it's fine but under that is very rough.... only started in the past couple of weeks..... can I use WD40 to clean the MAS? and what is the ISV and where it is to be found.... and how do you clean it?Thanks, want to have a go at this tonight as it stalled 4 times on the way home and I've got to go on a site visit tomorrow! please help!!! DreadedDev 0
have just taken the MAF out and it looks all clean and air filter looks okayish.... any quick fixes i can do?? need to get this sorted tonight if poss??
kie_dub 0
did you touch the maf? hope you didnt spray wd40 on it mate you will have wrecked it, chances are made it 10 times worse
gavinvr6 0
DONT SPRAY THE MAS/MAF WITH ANYTHING.the only thing that you could use that you might have laying about is electrical contact cleaner spray. it's delicate enough if sprayed from a distance of a few inches away from the maf opening and dries without residue.the isv is a silver coloured cylinder with a small black box attached to it. start the car and unplug it if its working correctly the engine note with change and idle will become erratic, to clean this remove it from the engine and spray inside with electrical contact cleaner, can use brake and clucth cleaner if its rotten as this is a bit more agressive. you can also try cleaning out the baffle by flooding it with contact cleaner incase it is choked with dirt as its just a mesh filter inside, kinda like some wire wool. allow everything to dry completely before re-fitting and starting the engine.erratic idle can also be caused by the coil pack or a lead breaking down and shorting on the block. best thing is run a fault code reader/vag-com on the ecu and see what faults come up
DreadedDev 0
Thanks Gav... given the price of replacement I decided against it and just wiped the mesh at the front with a clean cloth, which did bring off quite a lot of black, so the chances are the MAS does need cleaning, will get something from local car spares place tomorrow, and just put up with the stalling (and the beeping!!), being an auto it's hard to keep it revving and then pull away cleanly.... Would the coil pack be effected by heat, as like i said, at first start up and running it's fine... i have noticed some sort of code flashing up when i start the car on the mileometer no 1073 or something like that (will check tomorrow).... Anyone in Oxfordshire got a fault reader and fancy hooking up for half an hour???
kie_dub 0
is it not is001 or is002 something like that, if so then its just service reminders 001 is minor 002 is major.Go to maplins and get their electrical contact cleaner, halfords do it too but they dont stock much of it. if your car is na then i cant see heat being a problem really that its going to damage the coilpack
DreadedDev 0
okay, brought some elvctrical contact cleaner today, so going to hopefully have a go at this tonight, however should I pry the mesh off the end of the MAS before spraying or should I leave that in place and spray from a few inches back (can't imagine much will get in if i do).... want to make sure i do this properly....I have printed off the guide on here, but it is unclear... DreadedDev 0
also how much should i spray on? should i soak it or give it a light dusting?
kie_dub 0
spray a fair bit on it then leave it to dry, have a look at at see what it looks like then repeat. your better off not soaking it as only so much will clean it and the rest will just run off it, so just keep repeating the process, thats what i do anyway never failed for me
