Key fob door locker - info on spare replacement needed pls

Recommended Posts

Hello to ALL!

Re: 1996 VR6

I recently bought a Golf MK3 VR6 Highline and received with it, 1 VW fixed key and 1 tatty (snapped in half!) old non-VW looking remote fob that locks the doors only ( I think the alarm has been deactivated as no blips).

There are no markings on the key fob so I cant tell what codes are or who its made by, it has a red plastic lens on the top narrow part of the fob and a metal bit where a key would be but no key is actually on it, it also has the button to pop a key up, but like I say, no key is there. (looks like a copy of a VW fob)

I wanted to know if I can get a replacement fob with flip blade key built in? or even just a new fob. Also, how much would this cost roughly?

Thank you for any help.

Basically what you need is a replacement fob with the red bit because that tells you what type of chip is inside. You will then need to program it (Remote only), now most aftermarket alarms have a procedure you can follow to add a new fob, I have found this on the net which might help. I assume they are talking about the standard alarm as no reference is made to other alarm. Link here .... http://www.techwatch.co.uk/forums/10159-vw-remote-key-fob-programming-guide.html

After that you can go down to a good locksmith and they will be able to code and cut the key blade

PS: very important that you get the replacement with the red plastic bit at the top.....

Some people have used mk4 type keys, you can buy them new of ebay, I remeber reading on a forum where the guy literally moved the transponder from the mk3 type key to the mk4 key??

Hope this helps......

No problem mate, are you sure the car does not have an after market alarm system? Did you look in the engine bay a for a alarm horn, mayb that can be used as a clue?? Also might be worth going over any old receipts that you got with the car for installtion certificate and so on..... btw lovely highline you have there, not that I am bias :)
