RFC84 0
Got my kit from ebay and was gonna try fit it todayhttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=190288376544Ive found these guides, just wondering if theres anything that it has missed or if theres any other guides that would be helpful? thegoth 5
think they cover it all. If you are careful taking the housing off you should be able to keep your new crack pipe for future use.
Ed 2
YOu saved me starting another new thread! I have to purchased the same kit an will be fitting mine tonight and or Saturday morning! Looks like an easy ish job!
thegoth 5
can be ;-) only three bolts but they can get corroded and sieze. The housing has metal sleeves which on mine (1992) had completely rusted to the washers and bolts so I had to drill them out. A good dose of WD40 or even better plusgas will help. RFC84 0
Thanks Goth...did you mention the other day to re-join the pipes with jubilee clips??
thegoth 5
yes, you are likely to shag the existing spring clips whilst getting them off unless you have the proper tool
pat_986 0
Just got the last kit!Anyone going to do the water pump at the same time? Just thinking the VW G12 (or whatever it is called) is bond to be £20odd, so wondering if it a false economy not to do the pump, while doing the rest???
VR6Pete 1,455
They dont call it a crack pipe for nothing just be carful, I know loads of people who've cracked the crack pipe
thegoth 5
the kits come with one. which is good it's jut a bit of a pain to do as the access isn't great to undo the the connection to oil cooler.as for the water pump that is a far greater job as it won't come out without undoing the engine mounts and jacking the engine up. so really depneds on your comitment and level of skill
pat_986 0
Well, i'm capable of doing the work, just wondering if its one of things that people do while they are there?think I will leave it as I think the pump is good, and shouldn't be much greif to change later if needed. Thanks
thegoth 5
if I know the coolant is relativly fresh I have no problems with reusing it assuming I can catch it ;-)
pat_986 0
Yeah, think I would do the same. Why is it so importnat to use this G12 stuff? Sorry first VW!
thegoth 5
As well as antifreeze it has a corrosion prohibitor. the original G12 wasn't compatible with the earler G11 formula. so if you wanted to change you needed do have a damn good flush.VW then released the plus version which could be mixed.these days it's G12++ not sure what the second plus signifies. Ed 2
I read some were that some people dont put the stat back in when replacing? is this true?
thegoth 5
I've certainly heard of people running without them temporarily, or with then knowingly stuck open ;-) But it's best to have one, helps get the engine up to running temp quicker. Reducing fuel consumption and wear. Using a low temp one is a common choice.
Ed 2
was tempted to get one from awesome but as i have one sitting in the garage i might as well use that! ill think ill do the job with the stat in!
