dirty 0
Ive been offered a TDO5H-16G, its made by mitsubishi and ran on scoobys, im told its capable of 350bhp. firstly could it work on the vr lump without choking it? Also if i ran it at 6-7psi what could i achieve performance wise? Thanks in advance
kcw 1
Think that'd be a little small, got to remember scobbis and evos are only 2Litres, yours is a 2.8. My mates was looking at a similar turbo for his 20vt, and the 16G was gonna be the sooner spooling, even on a 1.8 so I'd steel clear.Maybe get a 2nd opinion though as I'm not geat with my turbo knowledge.Ken
FishWick 21
You need to find a compressor map for it and see where it surges and chokes with a VR6's flow.If I were you, I would just stick to the tried and tested turbos that have been used on VR6s for years.
dirty 0
yeah ive been looking for compressor maps but to be honest not that clued up on how to get the info i need from them. What turbos have been tried and tested then i see youre running a gt35, i do searches all the time but by the time youve read a complete thread ure heads spinning.lol. Can you name any turbos i could be looking out for or even which cars i could be looking to pinch one off? thanks the help in advance people
Bobtrude 0
Im using the CHEAP t04b garret turbo. Its great . with ar63 exhaust (i think)Its at full boost at 3800 rpms and goes strong all the way at 8-9 psi. Now going to boost 14-17 psi so lets see how it holds up . According to atpturbo.com it should be able to give 450 ish hp. So to answer your question, buy a cheap garret t4 turbo. If u want earlier spoolup just buy a t3/t4 hybrid, that wont be able to do 450 hp tough. (you will want more boost;))
dirty 0
how much was your t04b and where did you find it? Its knowing what to look for thats the problem?
FishWick 21
Indeed it is when you first start out!Where do you want the beef of the torque to kick in? And do prefer top end shove, or mid range thump?Popular turbos over the years for the VR6 have been:-GT3582R, GT3076R, T60-1, T04B, T04E, T04S, T70 etcThe "R" in GT35R denotes ball bearing. The others there are Journal bearings. Journal bearing turbos are rebuildable, ball bearing ones aren't. Something to bear in mind for future replacement costs.Having said that, BB ones have fewer parts so are very reliable if looked after and fed with good quality oil. They're the tried and testeds.Borg Warner (who make 85% of OE turbos) are now hitting the after market and they're proving to be very popular. Offering more strength, faster spool up and more power compared to the equivalent size Garrett.Schwitzer, if you can find them, also made VERY good turbos. Swiss engineering, they make the best watches, enough said :-) Borg Warner took them over recently. There's also Precision Turbo and a new company called Bullseye turbo!Plus of course all your cheap Chinese copies on ebay.Take your pic mate! I can't help you with turbo sizing for the non garretts. It took me long enough to get my head round their huge range and numbering system!!I can however recommend the GT35R if like good midrange clout with a good top end too.If you're not so fussed about top end, the GT3076R is a good un. dirty 0
ok good, ive got some numbers and figures to be looking at now, thanks. Im after mid range performance to be honest, its originally a track car but ive made it road legal so i want it to perform lower down and mid. im staying clear of the cheap chinese copies i think, id rather buy a second hand quality turbo rather than a new turbo which wont last, unless anyone can correct me and say that the copy turbos are of good quality? So do any of the turbos uve listed come standard on any cars? Or are they all pretty much aftermarket upgrades? Cheers
FishWick 21
So do any of the turbos uve listed come standard on any cars? Or are they all pretty much aftermarket upgrades? Why put yourself through the hassle of making a s/hand turbo from a standard car fit, which will more than likley be f'cked anyway, when you can get a brand new T3/T4e for around £450? - http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=GRT-TBO-034&Category_Code=TBNTurbos on standard cars are sized for a particular job and rarely have much head room beyond + 50-60hp. You won't be happy running low boost for long, you WILL want to turn it up, so make sure you get a reasonable size turbo to begin with :-)

dirty 0
ok people quick one is this a good turbo spec to suit the vr6 lump70mm inlet .5 A/R60mm outlet 1.15 A/Ri thought the outlet would be bigger than the inlet? this turbo business is drivin me nuts.lol.Thanks people
FishWick 21
So the compressor intake is 70mm and the turbine exhaust outlet is 60mm? 60mm turbine outlet is a little on the small side tbh, but the 1.15 AR isn't so bad.
