My VR6 turbo, Haldex 4wd. The end....

Recommended Posts

Took me car out for a drive earlier, and i think its sorted the boost prblems, but didn't really get far as its making the biggest loudest screeching whilest driving!! And it judders when pulling away in 1st gear.

So atm not too good. But the weekends here so i can have a look an see what the problems are and if i can fix them. :-(

Yep, you were right mate, something simple stikes again!!

Jack it up after a spin round the block this morning and saw that the exhaust has been rubbing on the first part of the prop. And that was what that terrible noise was!

Took it up the workshop and made the 2 dump pipes that run off of the wastegates, and fitted a rubber anti-vibration mount to the exhaust to stop it rubbing the prop.

Exhaust feels nice n tight now, might fit 1 more to it at a later date. And the noise has stopped!!

Once i'd finished, i took it for a good blat home. Boost was held at a constant 0.5 bar (both wastegates running 0.5bar springs) which is good news! So the rev limit will be raised tomorrow to see if the boost spiking has cured.

Basically, r32 subframe doesn't fit a mk3 shell. The syncro parts bolt up to the mk3 shell, apart from the diff in the syncro subframe. So the subframe was modded to fit the diff in. This saved moding the car for the r32 subframe, and having to re-align/mount the different suspension etc. Yoy can't mix n match syncro and r32 gearboxes and rear diffs, its 1 or the other setup.

But i started with a vr, so why sell the engine an buy an r32? Its different because its a mk3 golf, vr, r32 4wd, original engine for the car. I like the way the 12v vr engine behaves, and its far simpler than the r32/36 lumps.

yer fair point, the vr is a awesome bit of engineering simplicity, and judging by the thread it was a whole lot easier to pr-fab yor own floor pan compared to cutting in the whole floor of the syncro, which a friend of mine tried and failed, which is y i find my self in the position to buy the syncro bits lol

i just need to find out if it will sum how fit the rado shell :(

i agree with the originality side of things. i just wondred why not start with a larger capacity engine since it cant be cheap to up a vr to a 3 ltr. just thought it would be easier. but then i like taking the3 easy way as i dont have the technical savvy to do what many of the gus here do.

i think paul and many others here are not only pushing the boundries of what can be done to a mk3 vr i think their destroying them and showing that dedication, imagination and a fair size pair of cahooners can yeald awe inspiring results. im gunna be sending my funeral hearst round to his for a 6 pot turbo conversion when the time comes lol

Its alot more work to put a R32-36 engine in. and more money.. don't feget you will have to add money into a R32 engine to turbo it.. and the parts cost more. 400 + bhp is 400+ bhp. maybe a different power delivery. personalty i don't think the extra work and money of putting a 24v engine in would bring any gains unless the power goals where a lot higher.

If you run a turboed VR without boast or low boast does it sound the same as a N/A VR? i love the sound of both

Raised the rev limit and it feels good! Put it up to 6500rpm soft limit, 7000rpm hard limit.

Held boost fine, just can't get higher than 0.5 bar of boost, so needs playing with before billing.
