dub_weiser 0
Haven't started the VR for a few weeks and the battery has died :? . Got in today and thought better give her a charge. Was in a bit of a hurry putting the wires on and wog the negative and positive leads mixed up (it was dark I tell ya!!) and the battery never charged sufficient for the VR to start. Have I caused any damage coz its doing my head in. Can't believe I've been such a twat.
Eat this 2
prob not wire it up right and try again
dub_weiser 0
was only mixed up for about a minute, then changed it over and got a burnt finger in the process! But did wana start. Starter motor is on its way out too so that might be adding to the problem. But was at it for fifteen minutes trying every 3 minutes to start her. Bugger

acf8181 0
when i put a charger on a car the wrong way round it just sent shit loads of sparks into the air when i tunred the power on, so i switched it off immendiately. no probs afterwards.
Guest Olly_K
i would check the whole fusebox.A minute does seem like a long time tbh..........but, like has been said, charge it up and see how it goes.

dub_weiser 0
Thanks guys, soon as theres's space to give it another shout will do. Need to get the starter motor started before winter comes. Is it worthwhile gettinga recondtioned one or just get one new?
VR6Pete 1,455
speak to kilokiller at Stoke VW spares! he normally has a few lieing around.... check companies section in the forum.
alivr6 0
do any lights come on when you turn on the ignition, if so give it a push start....if not then take the battery out and give it a overnight trickle charge. put it in the next day and turn her over, should start
dub_weiser 0
Yeah lights come on, alarm wouldn't shut up (think I up[set a few neighbours!) Push start that sounds like too much trouble. Plus as its an auto that may be bit difficult.
Eat this 2
i dont think its posible to push start an auto
alivr6 0
true you cannot push start an auto, best bet will be is to get another car and do a jump start.as for the alarm, can you not switch it off with from the remote. what alarm is it?
dub_weiser 0
Its a standard VW cat1. It switched off in the end, think that was just due to a low battery on the car. Sure it'l be up and running in no time.
acf8181 0
you shouldn't push start any car that has a cat, it can damage it. auto's are a no-no regardless.whats the probs with starting? i had a prob with starting previously that turned out to be battery, despite a garage saying it was the starter. it would not turn over, then would all of a sudden turn over and start if i kept persistantly trying. dub_weiser 0
Its definitely a dead battery I'm certain of that. But my starter motor is almost on its last legs. Didnt get a turn from the engine at all. Whenever i turned it failing to get a spark the engine would make a persistant mad clicking noise.
acf8181 0
that clicking sound happens when the batt is dead as a dodo, time for a new batt most likely.
Eat this 2
yup as above the clicking is relays switching they turn on the voltage from the battery drops they turn off the volts go up etc etc etc etc
shail 0
I thought my starter was on its way out as well, it turned out to be a corroded earth strap off the starter - it had been struggling to start before it totally gave up. works fine now witha DIY strap. dub_weiser 0
Well finally got her start run her for about five mins (woo hoo) BUT thought I'd take her for a run to charge the battery and went to get my wallet had to turn the engine off as no one to watch out for the car. Came back literally 2 min and wouldn't start!! Arhhhh tried tried tried again for another fifteen and finally gave up. Will try again tomorrow now. Wana avoid getting a new battery if I can. If I start and charge it up you guys reckon it'l be ok or is it shot?
acf8181 0
only way to tell is do it, if it keeps loosing charge then its a gonna...cost about £45 from halfords.
