Hey everyone, iv just changed the clutch on my vr, all went well and i did the job, whilst it was up on the axle stands i started it up to check everything was fine which its was the car started and stayed on. i revved it a bit then turned it off literrally a minute later i went to start it again and now it wont stay on, it starts then just dies straight away.

Anyone got any ideas? starter motor is fine as it starts, fuel pump sounds like its running on turn over, theres obviously a spark cos it starts then stops. Im thinking its got to be a sensor or sum sort but its strange how its just developed from changing the clutch,

any help will be appreciated, thanks

yeh i have done a search and thats been mentioned but i just cant think why its just sudenly started doing it, i did have the battery disconnected from the car over night while i waited for a new clutch do u think it could have wiped something?

my house mates got a vr6 but the earlier engine model and i swapped the crank sensors over, the plugs are the same but my sensor has a rubber seal, didn't disconnect the battery tho, still didn't start either

had some progress iv got a mate who's run a diagnostic on it and its come up with fault code 17978 which is imobiliser, and the ecu also came up saying not authorised, is there anychance i have locked my ecu somehow from having it disconnected from the battery for a day? can i bypass the imobiliser? didn't even think it had one

it has a vw factory immboiliser mate - which runs from a chip in the key - when you go to start the car it sends a signal to a little box in the dash and then to the ECU - this was the problem with my car in that the signal was broken somewhere along the line and the car kept cutting out - you either have to take the car back to VW to have the immboiliser re-programmed or find a friendly company you can remove the code for you - although if you don't have an aftermarket alarm this is not wise as it leaves the car unprotected

reader coil is a form of immobiliser if it dosent reognise your key it immobilises but the car starts then stops. Just my opinion dont know about ECU maybe its linked somehow not needed to have mine VAG-COMMED yet

hello mate thanks for the reply, my mate cleared all codes several time and it did the same each time, iv opened up my key and cant see a chip in it, read somewhere its a little green one but there nothing other than the light

well not opened a key up to be honest so not sure but I know the sequence is meant to run from the key to the reader coil in the steering barrel to a little black box and then to the ECU to agree th code and back to the key which then starts the car - I changed the ignition coil on my car and it didn't make a difference and in the end as I also have an aftermarket immobiliser I had the sequence removed and now the car starts and runs perfectly - VW will be able to re-program the key etc but will charge you a few quid to do it I would think

ive had same problem to you ,i had to take it to dealer to reset code on immobilizer , you can drive it there if you reset ecu you can run engine once as it will lock ecu once turned off , reset ecu by disconnecting batt for 15 mins, its an easy job for vw computer, my code reader wouldnt do it only vw can

I had the same problem on my old VR. Engine would occasionally cut out when I'd go fast round a corner (nice and safe). Found out that the weight of all extra keys I had on my car key ring was moving the key in the ignition enough to move the chip away from the sensor in the barrel, and this would cut my engine. Took all my keys off my keyring and gave the ignition key a wiggle whilst in the barrel - seemed to "fix" it, went on for years like that. Now I never attach any keys to my ignition key. Dunno if that's of any use to you, just throwing it out there.

sorted had to tow it to golf to get it done but they reset the ecu imobiliser code, got it back and the battery light was on turns out id put the alternator live to earth...woops, that might be why it lost its code, its fine now and im so happy iv got my car back :)
