Must have been a mix and match phase VW went through

using up all the old bits they had left in stock. I have even seen a proper / pukka highline with the rectangle repeaters

I want to buy a fault code reader as it's a pain in the rear taking my laptop out everytime. All the code readers on the market with obd2 sockets say there for 96 and after. Will they still work?

pretty sure the answer is yes as they talk the same protocol unless the OBD2 talk quicker. do you have the make and model?

OBD stands for on board diagnostics...its only the management all this obd2 wings brakes? You have pre mid 95 sqaure repeaters etc and the later stuff ovals etc.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have an early highline which is obd1 as you said you have obd1 throttlebody

It just gives the fault code but I just want something smaller than a laptop.

a guy at works got one of these...in red, mac tools i think. ive never used one tho, if i plug it in the diagnostics port it will show some codes (or hopefully not!) that tell me wots up with the car? is that right?

Yes it gives the fault as a basic codes then you can look up the code on Ross-wiki. I have VAG-COM but my laptop is too bulky to carry around. I need to make sure it's charged then walk down the road with it and hope the battery holds charge.
