Hey guys i'm hoping you can help me out with a problem i've got with my obd1 engine in my mk2.

It all starts from when i thought i would take the plugs out to see what condition they were in and give them a clean until i got new one's. I removed the leads and the plugs one by one and cleaned them. After they were all replaced i firede up the car and heard what i really wasn't expecting, a 6 cylinder engine on less than 6 cylinder, 5 or maybe even just 4, not sure. My first thought was, i've knackered the leads so i bought new plugs, dizzy cap and rotar but i had to borrow some leads from my mate due to a not being able to get new leads when i wanted. Everything was fitted but still the car was running really badly and i forgot to say earlier that alot of smoke was coming from the exhaust. I then took it to my mate at his garage and he played about with the leads thinking that maybe they were in the wrong order. Eventually after this made no difference he came across some burnt out wire's that had shorted underneath the inlet manifold. The wires were something to do with the dizzy so he repaired them and told me to get another dizzy which i did and gave to him to fit. I spoke to him today and he told me that it does run a bit better but there's still a problem so i've got a spare ecu that we're going to give a bash and hope this sorts the problem. I forgot to say that cylinder no 5 is full of unburnt fuel but he's checked the injector which seems to be working fine. No 6 has a small amount of fuel in it aswell.

If the ecu does not solve the problem then i'm going to be alot more pi$$ed off than i already am. I've not even driven the bloody thing yet.

Another thing is that we can't find the diagnostics port either so we can't even check the ecu for faults.

Hopefully you've managed to stay with me and can understand what i'm on about and can maybe help me out a little if not alot.

Thanks

Simon

  • 3 weeks later...

Still need some help with this if anyone can help. Well the wiring was replaced along with another dizzy, new leads, plugs, dizzy cap, rotar arm and ecu. At the garage the car ran fine on a number of different occasions but i went to pick it up to take it home and on the way home about less than a mil intohe journey it went back to exactly how it was.

Please someone help me out because it's driving me mad.

Thanks

No never been checked so might be worth a look.

Since found out that this is a new problem and not the same as the first problem. It's only running on 3 cylinder. It doesn't seem to be the usual suspects like leads etc cos they're all new so any other things that it couls be?

Right mate this happened to me on saturday when i did a service, i changed the plugs and leads and oil, turned it on and it run like crap, misfiring, and smoking like mad. Ive solved my problem.

What colour is the smoke firstly? Mine was white, normally means water in the engine BUT mine turned out to be the ht leads, they where in the correct order but 2 where not pushed into the coilpack properly! pushed these in and it was fine. You have got to think that surely you cant have done anything that bad if you have only removed the plugs and leads. It took us over 2 hours to solve the problem.

Are your plugs wet? It is possible that your (rocker cover) i think has a slight leak and when you have removed each plug, the oil that has been there has gone into the cylinder causing it to smoke but that would probably not be white smoke, either blue or black.

Have you fitted the correct plugs and leads? (sounds like a silly thing to do but check they are the exact same plugs as was in it before.

Let us know how you get on

It's fixed no thank god. It's a fault with the wiring again. It seems whoever done the conversion hasn't taken as much care as possibe whendoing the wiring. We think there's alot of the mk3 wires in there that don't need to be which will all need to be sorted in te future. Anyway it's the wiring under the inlet manifold again. Some of this was replaced last week because about a foot and a half of it burnt out due to not being insulated properly. I don't know the exact ins and outs because it's not me that's doing it but my mate has replaced it again with thicker wire i think so hopefully all will be well. The smoke pouring from the exhaust was white btw.

Thanks for the help.
