Problem with exhaust blowing..assistance required. (Pics provided)

Recommended Posts

I have a '96 VR6 Highline.

I have take a few photos of the problem near the back box.

My question is, do I just need a new flexi pipe or a whole back box?

Don't want to get ripped at the garage when I take it to them tomorrow.

Complete technophobe when it comes to car maintenance.

Thanks for any advice.

that flex aint standard fittment mate .... ull need a new back box by the look of it but u may also need the axle (letterbox) slincer too ....

So if they say I need a new back box, they aren't ripping me?

Also, what is the axle (letterbox) silencer and roughly what cost am I looking at in total? (I am taking it to Town Tyres in Swansea..they are a decent indie garage)

dont be afraid to speak to made to order people also. they may be able to replace the section only for you.

You may also find that if there are offers on you can get a performance Stainless system for similar or even less.

Worth a interweb search for it. If you check the FAQs or search for exhausts you'll find names of people/manufacturers and comments

TBH I think you would be better off getting a cat back stainless exhaust system' date='

fit once and you can forget about replacing it .. ever!

If it's a two box system with cat they are still quite quiet,

Excuse my ignorance here but what is a 'cat-back' system, roughly how much are they and where can I get one from?

Thanks for the good advice one and all.

Problem I have right now is I am on the dole (made redundant last year), so funds are limited to say the least.

The advice given here is going to come in useful when I return to work but right now I need a low cost solution.

Could anyone give me any advice in that direction.

Many thanks.

Scrap yards and the bay

otherwise it may be worth finding a bit of pipe and popping down to the scrap yard or place that will weld and offering the bloke there a fiver to weld it in place with your help...

you could cut it out and replace pipe with any piece you can find... if you put some cut outs in the replacement part and stetch it a little then you may get away with clamps and a tub of exhaust sealant/repair gunk...

did this when i was a student with no money.... ;)

I could stretch to a replacement back box..would this do the job?

maybe. you can always pop down to kwickfit or the likes and getthem to pop it up and have a look see. They can usually show you the exploded diagram on thier pc screen so it will let you see how much/or what it is made up of.... you dont have to buy from them plus the viewing is free.

you just say your gonna go around the other suppliers and might be back....
