Does this mean I need to replace it?Also, scan ended with error message saying need to register software with author. Is that normal?Any help appreciated CheersAndy
russj249 2
The mass air flow meter detects how much air is going past it. It's like heating a small wire to a constant temperature. Obviously the more and more dense the air is going past it, the more it tries to cool it, meaning more power is needed to keep it at a constant temp. They are very common to play up on the VR's.It might be worth using some electrical contact cleaner first. You can get this from halfords, maplin etc Would recommend trying that before getting a new air flow meter. Spray it carefully inside the air flow meter.. on the metal wire bit. And also the 4 pin plug.Have you got an air filter that you have to oil? Such as K&N or Ram-air? These are the biggest problems for the mass air flow sensor. And yes, it came up with have to register software too. Just ignore that Hope this helps a bit,
thegoth 5
also just try toclear the error ans see if it comes back. Might be that someone has unplugged it in the past and not cleared the error at that time.
Hairyarse 0
Cheers for the tips chaps, Standard air filter so that shouldn't be the issue
Hairyarse 0
Another question, can you do anything else with VAG COM or do you just auto-scan for faults?
craggsy 91
Can check all sensors are working, how much air is going into engine etc etc....you can do quite a bit with mk3. Even more on mk4 platform
Hairyarse 0
Is it obvious how to do that (can you tell I've not messed with it much yet?)

Hairyarse 0
Thats cool, was worried I might screw it all up! I've got version 409 something, is that much different?
craggsy 91
Oh yes......i bought full version from ross tech. Seemed easier than faffing around with trying to get ebay cables working
Hairyarse 0
Fair dos, I'll faff around with my ebay cable a little while longer then! lol Looks like you have a bit more bhp to look after than me
Hairyarse 0
Plugged in again today and cleared all fault codes. They've not reappeared so that's good. However, another one has come up, no 533. I have found following on interweb; 00533 - Idle Speed Regulation: Adaptation Limit (Add) ExceededPossible Symptoms * Bad Fuel Economy Possible Causes * Air Leak between Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor and Engine * Injector(s) faulty * Fuel Pressure Regulator faulty * Throttle Body faulty * Intake Air Filter dirty Possible Solutions * Perform Throttle Body Adaptation * Check Hoses and Pipes to/between Components * Check Intake Air Filter * Check Fuel Pressure Regulator * Check Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve * Check Injector(s) I don't think I have bad fuel economy, average 25-30 mpg with a fairly heavy right foot. So is this anything to worry about?Any advice welcome CheersAndy
Hairyarse 0
BUMP - anyone?
thegoth 5
think you should at least do the first two items on the solutions list. the TB adaptes itself if you leave the ignition on without starting the car for 15mins.I'm sure someone will offer to have a look see at inters. we all do like poking around vr lumps ;-)
