Got VAG COM and cable and run on my VR. Got the following report

VAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-US

Chassis Type: 1H - VW G/J/V Mk3

Scan: 01,02,03,08,15,25,56

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Address 01: Engine

Controller: 021 906 256

Component: MOTRONIC M3.8.1 HS V02

Coding: 00000

Shop #: WSC 01315

1 Fault Found:

00553 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)

31-10 - Open or Short to Ground - Intermittent

Readiness: N/A

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Address 03: ABS Brakes

Controller: 3A0 907 379 A

Component: ABS/EDS ITTAE 20 GI V00

Coding: 03604

Shop #: WSC 00000

No fault code found.

Can anyone tell me what the Mass Air Flow Sensor is/does? Does this mean I need to replace it?

Also, scan ended with error message saying need to register software with author. Is that normal?

Any help appreciated ;)

Cheers

The mass air flow meter detects how much air is going past it. It's like heating a small wire to a constant temperature. Obviously the more and more dense the air is going past it, the more it tries to cool it, meaning more power is needed to keep it at a constant temp.

They are very common to play up on the VR's.

It might be worth using some electrical contact cleaner first. You can get this from halfords, maplin etc Would recommend trying that before getting a new air flow meter. Spray it carefully inside the air flow meter.. on the metal wire bit. And also the 4 pin plug.

Have you got an air filter that you have to oil? Such as K&N or Ram-air? These are the biggest problems for the mass air flow sensor.

And yes, it came up with have to register software too. Just ignore that :D

Hope this helps a bit,

Plugged in again today and cleared all fault codes. They've not reappeared so that's good. However, another one has come up, no 533. I have found following on interweb;

00533 - Idle Speed Regulation: Adaptation Limit (Add) Exceeded

Possible Symptoms

* Bad Fuel Economy

Possible Causes

* Air Leak between Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor and Engine

* Injector(s) faulty

* Fuel Pressure Regulator faulty

* Throttle Body faulty

* Intake Air Filter dirty

Possible Solutions

* Perform Throttle Body Adaptation

* Check Hoses and Pipes to/between Components

* Check Intake Air Filter

* Check Fuel Pressure Regulator

* Check Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve

* Check Injector(s)

I don't think I have bad fuel economy, average 25-30 mpg with a fairly heavy right foot. So is this anything to worry about?

Any advice welcome

Cheers

Andy

think you should at least do the first two items on the solutions list.

the TB adaptes itself if you leave the ignition on without starting the car for 15mins.

I'm sure someone will offer to have a look see at inters. we all do like poking around vr lumps ;-)
