ianmac666 0
Hi everyone, my first post am really hoping for some help please. Basically, had my golf vr6 (96N) for about a year and have had very few problems with it, until about a month ago. First mot check on emissions it was at 12% Co!!!! It had only been running badly for about a week in which time I had changed the blue ECT sensor (genuine one) and it had a new lambda sensor a couple of months previous. After a bit of discussion with the garage, they had suggested a cat, an air mass sensor, a lambda sensor......yeah i'd replace all that if they're paying for it, and they hadn't done a diagnostic!I then took it to have a diagnostic done as they didn't have the tool there, came up with ECT sensor and oxygen sensor fault. I hadn't had the fault cleared after changing the ECT as i'd been told i wouldn't need to. Back to the mot, 4%, still nowhere near the 0.2% i needed. with faults cleared it was like a different car, ran some forte injector cleaner and emission cleaner through it, back up to 6%!!! Went back on the fault reader...oxygen sensor. So i put another Lambda sensor in it...brilliant 0.00% on idle, 0.09% on fast idle, lovely fuel economy, much better pull, for about a week, (i wonder if faulty temperature switch had killed the previous lambda sensor), now it's back hesitating again so i put a standard airbox back on with nearly new air mass sensor. i've thoroughly cleaned the throttle body, including taking it off and thrown a new set of spark plugs at it as they were pretty black with how it had been running. Now i'm a little lost, it's been onto diagnostic without finding any more faults, just oxygen sensor...it said that a week after putting the new bosch one on, it seems to be that if i clear the fault it runs great for a week then the oxygen senor fault comes back, if anyone has had experience of this and could help it would be really appreciated.Thankyou
ventovr6essex1 0
make sure you have the right lambda sensor . iIgot caught out when I changed my exhaust over from my old car there are 3 different sensors fitted to mk3s i belive and i had alsorts of problems until i fitted the sensor that was on my car originaly . mMght be worth getting the part number from the main stealers to make sure you have the correct probe in the car . just a thought
Rikki 2
REALLY!!!! i thought they were the same just with the square or rounded plug???
jims13 6
no they are different. although i think some have since been superceeded and now 1 fits all, if you get the correct one.its worth check ing the plug at both ends, as the wires do rot and will make poor connections.. poor fuel consumption and performance is usually a dead or dying maf or lambda.. could be the cat but unlikely. you should clear the fault codes , run it and see hat comes up then replace that. jims13 6
forgot to say, premuim members benefit from a vagcom service, as i do beleive we have a unit that can be lent out for testing and diagnostics
ianmac666 0
thanks for the help, i have thought about getting a handheld code reader but don't know if they're any good. I'm sure you can't kill a lambda sensor in a week?Is it possible the coil pack could cause this sort of problem?
