jimballs 0
Morning all, yesterday I had my standard discs & pads swapped out for a set of Greenstuffs & Grooved EBC discs all round. The guy that's fitted them says give it 300 miles while they bed in, take it easy on them, and expect them to be a little noisy in the meantime... Anyway whilst chugging along the bypass last night at about 70-80 there was a gentle turn to the left & as I went round one of the rear pads felt like it 'grabbed' for a split second which lurched the car & scared the shit out of me! I hadn't noticed it too much until then, but the noises I'm getting are kinda more harsh than expected, some really loud squeals & some proper grinding sounds (I think I woke up everyone on my street this morning!). Is this expected? Don't really feel like driving it when it sounds like something is gonna fall off any second, and people look round as I drive past (and not because of the normal VR6 engine noise, I don't mind that!). Cheers, Jim
jimballs 0
This was getting worse on the way home last night, so it's gone back to the garage, looks as if the caliper's slipped somehow & has been eating the rear-driver side disc :/ Hopefully it's not too badly damaged. Guest The Butcher of Billing
If its badly damaged through being incorectly fitted then the garage should rectify the problem imo
rodney 17
yeah that shouldnt be sounding like that.... 300miles on a bed in is a lot. 50miles nice and easy is more important. you're trying not to glaze them over.I would persue the garage to fix and replace as necessary if I were you... jimballs 0
Apparently one of the new wheel bearings let go & mashed itself to pieces, perhaps a manufacturing fault I'm told - will be replaced & expected back tomorrow at no extra cost. Quite right since I've done £500 on brakes alone, I must be fucking nuts!I can't believe I am daydreaming about a charger too :/

jimballs 0
Nothing that dramatic really, I bought a set of drilled & grooved discs that didn't fit for £40 (think they are for a Mk4, the offset is wrong apparently). Just Grooved 288 EBC's all round & greenstuffs too, new bearings plus £60 labour & there we go, £500! You'd think I'd have some mad Porsche set up for that money eh
bungy 2
Hope all turns out well.
xyber 1
I put money on it when the fitted the new rear bearings they assembled them wrong and the grease seals got pushed out and the bearing overheated
jimballs 0
Cars all sorted, I'll get it back in an hour so fingers crossed it wont eat a bearing in a day again oO...I bought a set of drilled & grooved discs that didn't fit for £40 ...I've just re-read the TT conversion guide:- The offset of my new & currently fitted discs looks quite large' date=' and very similar to the TTs on the right shown below, these are on & as far as I am aware do not have a spacer installed.- The offset of the drilled ones I had already bought ( but according to the garage are '6mm out', and wouldn't fit) looks the same as the 288mm in the pic below. Also I bought these off a VR6OC member who reassured me these were originally off his VR6, I've no reason to doubt that. [img']http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z284/mpmx122/tt%20setup%20pictures/N95picture311.jpg Weirdness. My confidence in what should be quite a sturdy brake setup has taken a few knocks, I also have a set of lightly worn drilled & grooved 288 front discs spare now too. Cheers for the replies peeps, I'll try to get a pic or two up laters
jimballs 0
Car's back & all seems well, for now at least. I'll give it 50 miles from now & then give them a little work out
jimballs 0
Yep, the other wheel bearing dissintegrated just a few miles ago - it felt kinda floaty on my way over to Watford, then let go on the way back - grinding like a bitch again now Supposed to be moving stuff out of my ex's tomorrow, but I'm screwed now since I really don't want to go anywhere apart from the garage with the VR6 making that racket again. Gotta try & forget about it all for now & get some much needed kip.
spoonman2 2
Are these rear wheel bearings going or front? I had load noises from the front of mine, turned out both rears were ruined and wobbly... the noise was traveling to the front passenger footwell :/
jimballs 0
Rear bearing has gone on the wonk again on saturday, I think that is the 3rd one on that wheel in the last month now - any recommendations for garages local to Hemel, Herts?
craggsy 91
Where are you getting your bearings from, GSF/ECP/ motor factors? If so buy from VW and do em yourself, easy to do and a guide in premium section I do believe
craggsy 91
Oh and ive had my car 4.5 yrs and only changed 1 front when it started making noises and both rears when I bought new discs as its easier to do
CALICO 130
maybe you have a dodgy stub axle causing the problem shouldnt go through wheel bearings at that alarming rate without an underlying problem as Craig says easy to change yourself
RAPgolfvr6182 2
as a guide my m8 works at mercedes benz n they were taught that even braking/sun=m hard braking is better when bedding breaks in rather than gentle
CALICO 130
all depends on wha type of brakes they are some will glaze if they get too hot whilst new creating bad breaking just means getting the sand paper out if this happens but that is what i normally do any way
jimballs 0
Cheers once again for the comments, I'm not sure where the bearings were coming from - I'm booked into a garage at Bovingdon which looks promising - I need the belt tensioner bearing doing too anyway.
