Jonnyboy82 0
Hi all recently bought a used milltek catback for my golf vr6 got it fitted and i dont think it sounds right. It kind of sounds a bit tinny until the car warms up and even then it dont sound to me like it should? I dont know if its me or what as ive heard everyone else to be happy with their milltek but what could possibly be the problem? to be honest the garage who fitted it didnt have a clue but it looked to me like they fitted it right as i kept a beedie eye on them.Pls anyone with a milltek that can help out a dubber in distress :^)

Jonnyboy82 0
Cool thanks anyway I think when i get a chance i will take it to an exhaust specialist just wondered if anyone else could help me out beforehand.
The Monk 50
Daft question, was it sealed properly? To me that sounds like the exhaust isn't sealed correctly and it is leaking at 1 or a couple of places, hence why you have a tinny sound. My decat isn't sealed properly on the long pipe to the rear of the car, but as it's used and driven, it warms and the seal is increased by the exhaust ma expanding slightly by the heat of the exhaust gasses. Jonnyboy82 0
Tbh im guessing not as the garage were a bit well (clueless). Tip for the future never go where's cheapest as their cheap for a reason, lol.Anyway i hope you've hit the nail on the head there that must be it well im hoping anyway. Timah89 1
got MIlltek on mine and never sounded tinny, even when i had to swap it over from my old Gti to the VR, perfect first time fired up. i agree with the monk, may need sealing properly, you can do it yourself no problem
Jonnyboy82 0
That must be it then needs resealing, well hopefully anyway. But to seal it do i need to seperate it?
The Monk 50
Get it onto a ramp or into the air on stands....Pull the exhaust segments apart and use gungum or exhaust sealing paste around the joining and mating surfaces...don't be spareing either. Slide them back together properly and tighten the clamps.Jobs a gooden.
Jonnyboy82 0
Cool could it also be the clamps or will this make no difference?
Timah89 1
as per the monk!
Timah89 1
clamps shouldnt make a difference, as long as they are the correct size and in alright condition and tight enough - good gungum will do it
Jonnyboy82 0
I think the garage who fitted it used the clamps from the original exhaust?
The Monk 50
Clamps generally just make sure the sections don't fall apart, good seals are made with sealant/paste and clamps add to the security and slightly to the seal.Old clamps generally shouldn't be used or they should have used the size/exhaust specific clamps. Jonnyboy82 0
So i should have the correct clamps for the milltek then? I will see if i can source them from some where then i will re seal it with gumgum and put on the correct clamps.
vr6binks 0
you dont have to get the milltek clamps mate, just go to your local motor supplyer and get some new ones i think they are either 58mm or 62mm and about £2 each i think you will need 3 of them if its a cat back system !
