I have a problem with my car not starting sometimes. most of the time it starts first time, but once or twice a week it starts up then just dies on me. I have tried reving it when starting up again, but it gets to about 4 thousand revs then cuts out again. Ill come back to it the next day and it will start first time again. It has done this when the engine is cold and warm. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is????

sounds like the inbuilt immobiliser kicking in to me. dodgy transponder ring?

Yup, engine immobiliser.

I'm having the same trouble and have been since I got the car working.

I keep at it....worst time has taken me 13 key turns to get it going.

Trouble is it will cost £££'s to get set right.

hey. happened again today, but after the fifth or sixth time i reved it to 6 grand and a load of black smoke came out the exhaust. it smelt of petrol fumes quite bad and engine sounded bit 'burbly'. after about 20 seconds it was fine. i have just had the cat put back on for m.o.t, u rekon there might be a slight blockage through the exhaust system or something?

i had a similar problem last year with my vr, started up then died on random occasions. After a lot of messing it turned out to be the ignition switch, it was losing connection briefly when returning the key from the start position to the run position, i changed it and not had a problem since.

I replaced the ignition switch (on steering column) last year, then the problem was solved.

After driving for 10000km, I recently find the same problem happen to me.

During the recent 50 startings in a month, the problem happen 3 times.

1st time:

When the engine is hot, I stopped the car for just 1 minutes, then I failed to start again. (Engine was successfully fired up but it cut off immediately) The condition is exactly like the immobilizer is activated).

After taking a rest for few minutes, I successfully started the engine, everything was fine and power was strong.

2nd time:

Also engine was hot, when I stopped the car for 30 seconds, I failed to start the engine again.

Not taking any rest, I successfully started the engine again.

3rd time:

The engine was col, I failed to start engine & I successfully started the engine in the 2nd start.

Anybody know my new Ignition Switch is defective?
