kaptainkernow 0
Hi y'all!I am the proud owner of a P reg VR. I've had it now for about 3 months, in which I have serviced it, fitted new rear discs and pads, unseized a rear caliper. But.. The car develops a banging sort of judder under heavy braking. I'm not sure if it is a problem with the ABS, I was told it might not be working, and that maybe the ABS warning light is not working! Can I remove the ABS? and how? I can't tell if the knocky brake judder is a rear shock gone, and therefore causing a bounce under braking. ? Any advice would be great. Cheers!
cabrioman 6
is the pedal plusing or steering shaking ???? does the abs light on come when u trun the ing on on start up and go out ??? see if u can get it on vag com that would tell u if u had any faults .... kaptainkernow 0
Thanks for the reply. The ABS light doesn't come on when the ingition is turned on. The knocking/judder is not through the pedal or through the steering. It kinda feels like a shock has gone and it is causing a bounce!?? What do I have to do to remove the ABS? Cheers! ingham 5
removing the abs is a bad idea as the rear are set to over brake and if they lock the abs sorts it out so you would need a valve to limit pressure to rear
VR6Pete 1,455
Why cover up a problem and not fix it?It could be something really simple to fix. Get it on the VAG-COM and see what ABS errors come up with.
kaptainkernow 0
I'm going to get it on a VAG-COM ASAP. I spoke to a VW specialist today, they charge £30 to go on vag-com. He reckoned it is most likely going to be the ABS pump. He also said they are moocho-moocho dollar!! We'll have to wait and see. I read in the info on a car featured in a vw mag, that the owner used an AP Racing yoke (or something), when removing the ABS? I'm just thinking if it is the pump knackered it might be a cheap option.
mat-ryder 2
i had a similar problem when a rear shock and wheel bearing were gone
VR6Pete 1,455
kaptainkernow: look for people with VAG-COM in your local area in the VAG-COM helpers thread...http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?146266Why do you seem so keen on removing the ABS? I'm sure it would be easier to find a new ABS ECU / brain from someone breaking a VR6 of the same type?I can think of countless times ABS has saved the front of of my beloved VR6... contorted fungus 0
its an mot failure if the abs unit is removed but it will pass if the light doesn't come on. totally mad i know but thats the law. i am also having a problem with the abs unit on the diagnostic machine it reads as hydraulic pump not within parameters so i have changed it but it still doesn't work and the handbrake light stays on all the time
kaptainkernow 0
After chatting to a guy in a paint shop and a reply on here, I'm starting to think that the judder is being caused by a knackered shock on the back. The VR sometimes gets a bit 'skittery' when going round a corner and hitting a bump. But I still think the ABS is not right too. I don't really know what route I want to go down with the suspension, to coilover or not to coilover? That is the question! And I don't really know how low I want to go. I was looking at the Avo coilies, from Europerformance. Any good?
NicDale 0
its an mot failure if the abs unit is removed but it will pass if the light doesn't come on. totally mad i know but thats the law. i am also having a problem with the abs unit on the diagnostic machine it reads as hydraulic pump not within parameters so i have changed it but it still doesn't work and the handbrake light stays on all the timeI've got pretty much the same problem, can't remember the fault code though. I'll let you know if/when i solve it.
nolongervr6 4
Hi, I don't have a manual and was wondering if someone could tell me where the abs control unit is located on a mk3 obd1 ?
CALICO 130
the abs light needs to illuminate then extinguish for the MOT. does the airbag light lightup when the ignition is turned on if not someone has possibly disconnected the unit As Pete says maybe someone in your area has VAG-COM and could do it for Nothing or a drink
kaptainkernow 0
Hey guys, just a little up-date. Last weekend i fitted a set of Apex coilovers, and lowered the little fella as much as I could! After I had removed the rear struts, and taking the spring off the shock, testing the near-side shock, I found that the shock was knacked! It mush have been making the corner the car to bounce under heavy braking. I haven't had much chance to give it much of a run, but it seems to be pulling up nice and true. Having said that the ABS light doesn't come on, when I turn on the ignition. Still need a Vag-com session.Cheers dudes.
Phat VR6 3
ive removed my ABS, and love it. If you've changed brake pipes before and have all the flaring kit then its a easy job. If you still want to do it let me know and ill go into more detail
