i'm thinking about a spot of engine tuning, and want to stay N/a as the vr sound is worse than crack in terms of addiction lol

how are these for a start?

G60 final drive is what you want :)

Abso friggin lutely!

Forget the cams, chips, exhausts, filters..... with the exception a few parts, these all delivery very minimal gains.

The best thing you can do to a normally aspirated VR6 imo is lower the gearing :-). It's way too tall as standard imo and just exacerbates the VR6's inherent lack of bottom end torque. Especially sat on the motorway in 5th at 70mph. Get some cheif up your rump and there's just nothing there when you floor it. A drop to 4th required, which gets tedious after a while, may aswell buy a VTEC!

A close stack 6 speed, or just a shorter final drive with a Quaife will make the VR6 so much more drivable and fun!

on the motorway, its an animal. no need to drop a gear, its boom, power there instantly.

look on my nurburgring half lap video on youtube, it just pulls away from everything from practically a standing start and craigs schricked VR.

I'm looking for a cheap G60 final drive now, if anyone knows of anywhere? :) I was so impressed with the last one.

Stealth normally sell the G60 final drive for £50 if they have any s/hand ones in, but if not, it's the VW price of £220 as Pete says. A guy called "Hot Golf" on ClubGTI also rebuilds gearboxes and may have a few spare.

There's no trouble using a s/hand final drive, it's very strong and suffers very little wear, so fine to use. My s/hand G60 final drive has done 40K with double the torque VW intended and it's still going strong :-)

Economy - I never worked it out fully when naturallty aspirated but it was only like a 2mpg drop at worst, but consider this, if my VRT averages 27.7mpg with the lower final driver, if you're normally asp' still then you should get more than that!

As for revs, it reduces 5th by about 500rpm. So at 80 you're sitting at around 3400rpm ish instead of 3000, but 3500 onwards is where the bulk of the VR's torque lives, so as Pete says, you do indeed pull away from people quite convincingly :-)

A brilliant mod if you're planning on fitting a quaife or new clutch etc.

when you say complete strip down, do you mean, gearbox out and taken apart completely? or engine taken apart

to be honest i was thinking about a new clutch soon, as it's slipping sometimes, so would make sense to fit a new clutch and maybe a lightened flywheel to it whilst the gearbox is off

i know on a 16v engines there is a benefit to a lightened flywheel, but is there a benefit to a VR with a lightened fly?

N/A power is what i'm after, i've done boost, until i can charge a VR (££££), then maxxing the n/a power is what i'm after :)

Gearbox has to be removed and stripped completely, which is why it's best to roll it all in as one Quaife / Final Drive / Clutch job!

Light flywheel, yes, makes a nice difference but depending on what weight you go for and the brand of clutch, you might get a little judder and some vibration in the car. The OE flywheel is heavy for a reason ;-)

With the shorter final drive and a light flywheel, it feels so much better, more nimble and more accelerative.
