spindat45 0
Look forward to it. Was it worth travelling so far or was it more for the road trip.Worth every single mile for the end result and the road trip mate. Our aim was to get my car mapped and get the R32 Turbos (aka the wild animal) running issues sorted. I was the support driver carrying, tools, oil and just about everything that we might need, should either car develop any issues, but the R32 was the more likely of the two cars to have problems as mine had a succesful test drive the day before on the way to and back from Players.I met my cousin Sparkz and Raj from NS Tuning in North London at about 7.30pm on Monday and did the usual oil and water checks before we warmed up both cars and set off to dover for a 10pm ferry to Calais. The "R" had running issues which were being cleared by Raj on his laptop in the passenger seat en route. About half an hour away from dover the hazard lights on the "R" came on and we headed for the hard shoulder. Trip over I thought, but it was a false alarm. The oil light had come on but it was diagnosed as a faulty oil sensor. PHEW! The subsequent brisk drive to make up lost time, saw us arrive in Dover at about 9.15pm. On the way I had the pleasure of watching the two exhaust pipes lighting up in various shades and brightness of orange flames as unburnt fuel made its way out of the tailpipes Once onboard the ferry we left the cars on the lower deck, found a comfortable spot and contemplated what was ahead. We arrived in Calais at 12 midnight and then the fun really began. I'd never driven in Europe but was well up for the challenge of driving through the night. Shortly after getting on the motorway in France I was in desperate need of a pee. I really shouldn't have drank that bottle of water on the ferry. With the "R" up front and Sparkz at the wheel I could only hope that he'd stop soon. He did eventually, and not a moment too soon. Our aim was to make it through France, Belgium, Holland before arriving in Germany and our final destination of SLS tuning by 7 am. We stopped to re fuel and check oil every 150 miles or so and all was well with both cars apart from the "R" which didn't like low speed acceleration hence the flames coming from the tailpipes. At around 3am we stopped at a service station somewhere in Belgium and slept for an hour before the final leg of the journey into Germany. We hit a small amount of traffic on the motorway and I was about 3 or 4 lorries behind Sparkz when I heard a bang, similar to fireworks going off. It seemed to be happening when I lifted off the gas so I feared the worst for my car as we'd been driving in and excited manner shortly before. I wound down the window and sure enough could hear the backfiring. With no way of letting Sparkz know, I continued. When the lorries eventually got out of the way, I was greeted by the sight of the "R" spitting flames out of it tailpipes again but this time, with explosive bangs worthy of a warzone. Great fun watching people cut me up and sitting behind the "R" only to change back when they were greeted by a loud bang and two flames. The sunrise was amazing and about 30 minutes from SLS we drove through some beautiful villages with amazing views. I couldn't figure out if we were driving through fog or if we were high enough to be in the clouds. (Sleep depravation maybe) :S We arrived at SLS on time and were greeted Stefan and a selection of cars that had myself and Sparkz running around taking pictures like two kids in sweet shop. (See pics)My ECU was removed and the generic chip removed and read. A new map was programmed, installed and the ECU refitted, then it was onto the 4 wheel rollers. I could have cried when the guy sat in it and did the first run. Raj making jokes about trying to catch my pistons as they exited the exhaust didn't help but it held out as I knew it would. Boost was checked and came back fine but there was a little bit of belt slip. The lambda was checked and after a few tweeks to the map I got the 250 bhp I was hoping for from my engine which only has a ZR-1 stage 1 charger, a 6 branch manifold, a lightened flyweel and a ported/polished head on its list of mods. What mattered more to me than bhp figures was how it drove and the difference on a blast up and down the country lanes were instantly noticable. Smoother power delivery and a lot more low end torque as well as pulling smoothly to the redline 8-) Mine was sorted by 10 am and the focus moved on to the "R" which unfortunately had to stay there to have a few issues resolved. I drove it briefly back from a local village after a quick bite to eat and WOW is all I can say about it.We set off for the return leg of our trip at about 2pm in my freshly mapped VR and it soon became apparent that the car was so much more fuel effiecent as I managed to get over 200 miles of semi spirited driving to half a tank of petrol. I had the pleasure of treating my VR to some Optimax Racing petrol (100 Ron) on the way back so that might have something to to with it. Why don't they sell it here?We didnt' make the 8pm ferry as we'd hoped but the 10pm one, got us back to Dover just before midnight. An amazing day and a job well done by SLS tuning. They now own an rs4 and an s3, so stefan took the 2 cars off us for a good price. Raj does alot of work with stefan, so we decided to do the drive instead of getting the remap files sent to us. RIX 0
the black one is being stripped,so they are for parts the 2 car like the brakes one the blue one, they had at black golf silver hood from rote when we where there, they did an okey job on my buddies sls sports motor, but there adjusting is old no online chipping, back and forth (oppesit sides off the building)another quistion the blue mrk 4 is it komplet hpa set???hpa is hgp in germany and there chips work perfekt in dk.but you have 2 very nice cars there(envy other then the steering wheel is a big minus living in dk)
Ben Seabrook 4
Sounds like a good trip guys Kevin were you happy with that figure ? were they a bit conservative with the map ?
spindat45 0
Sounds like a good trip guys Kevin were you happy with that figure ? were they a bit conservative with the map ?I'm very happy with it mate. The quoted figure for a ZR Stage 1 set up is 250bhp and I've been told by NS tuning that SLS rollers tend to give slightly lower readings than those in the UK so we'll see if there's any difference when I do a RR day or the like here. As far as being conservative with the Map, I'd have to say not. They mapped it for driveability and for all round power so the figure doesn't mean as much to me as how it drives and it does that a whole lot better than it did on the way over there on the generic map. I've also got my original chip and one to put in once I've moved the MAF if I decide to do that. Stefan recomended moving it to before the charger so that it's in cooler air which makes sense. I'm going to look into relocating it and getting a pipe from charger to inlet in the near future to allow for this.
sparkz 0
another quistion the blue mrk 4 is it komplet hpa set???hpa is hgp in germany and there chips work perfekt in dk.but you have 2 very nice cars there(envy other then the steering wheel is a big minus living in dk)The blue mk4 is running a hpa short inlet manifold, but a vf engineering turbo kit (GT35R turbo) and custom mapping courtesy of stefan. Once this has been finalised and running properly, we will start to offer this kit in the UK. Power is expected to be around the 550bhp mark as well...
