advice on what sensor to replace

Recommended Posts

ok, my car has been playing up for a few weeks, stalling and not staring again without lots of throttle, over fueling, and just generaly driving lumpy, so much so i cant drive it,

ive changed spark plugs, leads, and fuel filter, and the fuel filter made it run worse.

anyway got a vag-com reader today and the fault codes it pulled up were

00522 engine coolant temp sensor

00537 oxygen sensor control

00513 engine speed sensor

what do i replace, all of them? and if so can anyone tell me if these are easy jobs or should i pay someone to do it for me?

any advivce would be gratefully apreciated *-)

Also if anone in my area wants to use my vag-com just pm me, i got the adapter for the obd1 aswell.

the 00513 is a cert on OBD1 engines if they are not running.

I'd say start with the coolant sensor as if that is giving the ECU duff info it can over/under fuel which will though out the lamda.

dead easy. it's in the thermostat housing. I'm sure someone will confirm which one. Held with a C clip. Will loose a bit of coolant when removed. Replace the seal as well.

Thanks, ive got "the blue one" just got to find the time to fit it, and the speed sensor is on order from gsf, also got a new coil pack as the one on the car is looking rather old and knowing my luck will only pack up in a few weeks anyway lol.

will let you know how it goes.

anyone who isnt a premium member i recomend you join, its been worth it just for the discount at gsf.

it's at the gearbox end of the block, front, near the bottom. Held in with a single hex bolt. Easiest to get to from underneath.

my rough cold idling and hot stalling at roundabouts has been sorted since I cleaned up the two ancillary earth connections on the negative battery block. I also did the positive ones. but the negs where the most corroded.

Can you measure the voltage, with the ignition on, across the connector of the PCV heater? mine is now 12V spot on, wheras the vr down the road struggled to get to 10V and he's having the same problem as you.

p.s. it has also sorted an intermittant o2 limit reached error.

update on the car

on saturday i first replaced the coil pack, that didnt realy make any diffrence, just a bit better on acceleration, so cleaned both battery blocks, but still no better, so i fitted the engine speed sensor and took her for a drive, she was driving like a piece of c**p for about 5 mins then settled down, and is now running fine, and im not getting choked by petrol fumes anymore, so typicly the last thing i changed was the problem lol,

im going to reset the error codes latter, and hopefully the o2 sensor doesnt re-occure.

have a new problem now though, although it is small, the lighting on the dash has packed up, hopefully its just a blown fuse, and i havent messed up some wireing somewere.

theres always something ent there lol.
