Best course of action when doing timing chains

Recommended Posts

Need to do the chains on Mrs B's VR, and want to know what the best course of action is? What I mean by that is, whether to leave the engine in place but just drop/lift the gearbox out, if indeed that is possible to do, or lift the engine and gearbox out completely? Someone has told me that it's 4-6 bots to remove the front panel, is that correct, and is it necessary. I plan to do the job over a weekend, as it is our daily.

Also need to replace the clutch, leaky aux water pump, oil pump (that I'm convinced is on it's way out), and will probably do the 'stat housing and crackpipe while I'm at it.

Anything else while I'm in there? Do the Golf VRs have the same issue as the Corrado with funny wear on the flywheel?

Cheers

Well, I've helped my mate do his chains in his Corrado VR, so not a novice. Got another mate who will be helping, he's done about 5 Corrados now, so is fairly hand with spanners.

So, best to take the whole lot out then? That's what we did with the Corrado, but there is far less room in the bay in one of them.

What about the front panel?
