kcw 1 Posted October 7, 2009 Report Share Posted October 7, 2009 EveningI'm in the progress of rebuilding my engine that had skipped a tooth and wanting to know a few things. I can get my hands on a valve spring compressor til next week to have a good look at the valves but I've got pics of them in the head, I think a couple of bent but want a 2nd opinion, sorry lots of pics.Also Before I start of the head what do you guys think about my bores? I've got a picture of each cylinder so you can have a good look. If they are damaged, is it much work to go to 2.9L? Pistons don't seem to have any damage on them from the valves which is good, more pics, sorry.Hope somebody can help me outKen Link to post Share on other sites

Phat VR6 3 Posted October 7, 2009 Report Share Posted October 7, 2009 yep the valves are bent, The way you find out for sure is to roll them along a table, Just shows up more easily.It would be easyer and cheeper to buy your self a 2nd hand head and just lap the vavles in and change the stem seals. they go quite cheep The vavle seats on yourrs could be damaged along with needing new valves ect.hard to tell from the pics but they don't look as fresh and clean as mine did, Can you feel a lip at the top of the bore? where the piston reaches the end of its stroke? With the piston at the top of its stroke do they rock forwards and backwards a lot?Can you feel and scores on the walls with your fingernail?Did it smoke or loose much oil before you slipped a tooth?how many miles has it done and any service history?and how much do you want to spend lol Link to post Share on other sites

Will checked the bores with a fingernail in the morning but was gave it a wipe after spilling bit of oil and didnt notice anything, will also check for play in the pistons.Cheers guys Link to post Share on other sites

russj249 2 Posted October 7, 2009 Report Share Posted October 7, 2009 what happened when it skipped a tooth, would the engine still run or would it run crap?Or aren't the valves damaged enough to stop engine from rotating.Might do a compression test on mine before I get the chains and everything done. kcw 1 Posted October 8, 2009 Author Report Share Posted October 8, 2009 Got an update, checked the bores this morning, cant feel any scores in any of them, I can feel a very slight groove when I think the top of the piston rings travel must be as its a little below where to top of the piston actually stops.Also there was no movement in any of the pistons at any point in the stroke of each one.Edit: Is £60 a good price for a complete head? Or at least try.Id be happy to pay £60 but as above skim, stem seals, lap valves and tbh new hydrolic tappets is a good idea.Bores ect sound fine... what millage's was it? You dont want to do a load of work for it to be swapped out in 2 months...If I read it correctly then you can get a new head for £60 then rude not !!!! Link to post Share on other sites
kcw 1 Posted October 8, 2009 Author Report Share Posted October 8, 2009 Head was stripped, cleaned, skimmed and rebuilt ran for 6k miles before car was broken, so its pretty much brand spanking total mileage on it was 84k.If you recon the bores sound ok then I'll get that head and get it timed up.
