Engine removal

My Bentley manual states that the front bumper and slam panel etc has to be removed when lifting out the engine / gearbox.

2 questions: is this necessary as it adds to the amount of work; is it easier to lift the engine leaving the 'box in situ?

Looking at doing the chains and sadly the head gasket shortly!!!!!!

Do you want to pull the engine out and away from the car, or only up a tad to access the chains?

If you want to pull it from the car, I would suggest removing the bumper and slam panel, this is really a 20 minute job! 8 bolts on bumper and can't remember how many on slam panel..

Pull them off and hoist enigne out, really is easier this way, safer to! I wouldn't fancy lifting the VR lump high enough to get over the slam panel..

Alot easier to pull the lump out, then remove the box, saves workin with the car in the way in awkward positons..

get the front off....absolutely everything is easier to do without it there, and as mark says it is piss easy to get off, unless you have aircon.

iv removed my engine without removing the front panel, it does come out but is a little tight, i have removed my front panel now though and it does look easier to fit the engine back in

is it a ball ache with aircon then?? what time frame am i looking at to get the lump out leaving my auto box in situ

also, what parts should i be getting b4 the job, ie timing chains etc

if i was you i would remove the box with the engine, it will be alot easier than seperating it & leaving it in the engine bay

Defenetly remove the engine/g-box from the car - its much easier!

i have got my front end off and all wires and things like that the only thing is the exhaust manifold whats the best way to remove i no that there are 6 17mm bolts was going to undo these as the others look like they will snap or round off any tips

lots and lots and lots of wd40 mate the one on the main to the head should be ok just be aware they are 12mm socket/spanner not 13mm as most people think

so the studs are 12mm socket how easy do they come off dont want to snap any or round them off and the 6 bolts on the downpipe are 17mm this is a pic of my front end also i have got to undo the propshaft think its just 3 12 point 10mm bolts and the usual driveshafts and 3 mounts then out she goes

well i have got to my last 6 job on my list just need help with 3 4 and 5

1 osf driveshaft

i am finding it really hard to access around there any tip or tricks would really help

2 propshaft

i no that its 3 12point 10mm bolts its just getting to them but i think i will get it done

3 power steering pump line

what do i do to remove the lines

4 gearlinkage

5 clutch slave
