I nearly had a heart attack at the prices they charge.Rear discs / pads and bearings = £312.Ball joint & wheel alignment = £280.I know that i can get the rear discs done for about £100 all in as my mates a mechanic. Anyone know how much of a ball acher the ball joint is to change?
Guest Olly_K
ball joints are pretty easy. never done it but pick up a bentley manual.
VR6Pete 1,455
heh... I had my rear discs/pads & bearings replaced last week £160 all in ..... that was at my local VW specialist!
dubloke 4
did mine myself, front and rear, easy really, get a haynes manual, it tells you the basics on mk.3's there even tho' it dont cover the vr model! wheel alignment is around the £70 mark from a dealer! ninja 0
Just got the rear discs from GSF last weekend-£43 for Zimmermans. Will be fitting this weekend my self. £312, with the pads and bearings also, sounds way too steep.
shail 0
Dubloke - I do like to have a go at fixing things myself - i just dont trust myself with life/death parts like brakes! But drama over - got all the parts for around £90 - just standard discs etc. Mates fitting them tommorow for £50 ish. Also - VW tried to over charge me £50 for the service - they said that it had 6 spark plugs instead of 4 - i asked if the plugs were gold plated at £25 a throw! Then they came out with "the sparks are special", then (this is the best) - "is your VR6 a diesel?" OMG these are main dealers!! Didnt pay the extra fifty in the end - small victory s'pose. ninja 0
I think you'll find it does have 6 spark plugs actually.
shail 0
Ninja - i know it has 6, you know it has 6 - it was their excuse for the extra £50 - thinking i didn't know, trying to blind me with science!
dubloke 4
not really that difficult to do the brakes, rears a little more complicated due to needing new wheel bearings and reluctor rings(for the abs) but still quite straight forward
Purpline 0
I phoned to book a service for mine yesterday and I always like to use a Dealership (Hayseldens) if I can. I asked how much a service would be and they quoted my £250! I said that it was too much and they told me that the 40, 000 mile service is the most important. I said it wasn't that important.Anyway, I've booked in with a small local Vw Specialist who seem to know what they're doing and told me that they use all the same stuff that they do at Hayseldens and advertise as an official URO supplier, for £130. That's better.
cliveyp 0
might look at booking mine in at Stealth on Sunday. He's about all i can trust with the VR i think!

Andy B 0
when I had my rad smashed by a dear last summer, VW put on a std rad on and were realy pissed when I said I wanted the VR6 one put on...took 3 months to sort out and convince them I knew there was a difference..don't trust VW main dealers as far as I could throw one!!
