Strange sound

i am getting a wierd noise from the rear right light, i took the carpet off and there was a small black box , is this my central locking motor, and can i take it apart to lube it up ??? or is there a easy replacment ?? cheers chris

Hi - yes this is your central locking motor Plenty going spare in scrappers and people breaking other golfs - does your central locking currently work?

yeah it works but makes a noise like its grinding.

the pump only runs when it's locking and unlocking. does sound like something is amiss. As Pete says try a scrappy

weird i should read this. was in the scrappy raiding a 97 golf and saw the exact same box behind the carpet. did wonder what it was. If you need another and have trouble finding one i dont mind sticking it in the post for a small fee.

Matey, check the electrical plug connection for water.

Daft as it sounds, a slight bit of water getting into the plug through the rear light seals can short it out.

It's a central locking pump, it's a vacuum pump, and will run on if there is a leak in the system, causing the whirring noise.
