OBD1 Highline

Recommended Posts

Went to look at a 95 N plate Highline... 3 door black and apart from paint being tatty in places (not a problem to sort) it was perfect but was an obd1 engine B) had early side repeaters and early boot trim (ie not fully carpeted or platic trimmed) so a bit of a crossover car

Question is are there any real probs to look out for on an obd1 engine and is it less reliable than an obd2? Id appreciate some honest opinions please :)

I was sure all highlines were obd2 as well do was quite surprised but I think the changover was 96 so there appears to be a few early registered N plate cars that are obd1 but please lets not turn this into a when did the changover happen discussion!

I'll get a price for changing the chain tensioners... obd2 has more sensors doesnt it and no isv but do these things make any difference to everyday running?

I suspect OBD2 mods were mainly to do with emissions controls, as has been said more sensors and better control with improved throttle body. Mainly for the american market I think as they are hotter on there emissions over there.

you sure it was deffo a highline (did you check the log book)? could have just been same spec.

only downside of obd1 is that they tend to wear out the top 'blade' runner at 100k ish. i suppose a theoretical upside is that theres less sensors so less to go wrong?!

if its a good car then buy it.

Nothing wrong with OBD1's on a day to day basis, although, again, i thought all Highlines were OBD2......

Anyway, like has been said, the ISV could need a flush out sometime but otherwise i have noticed next to no differences between the MK3 and the Corrado lump. Although the Corrado was OBD1 it had an OBD2 style diagnostic port, maybe the Golf would be the same...???

yeah, no point not getting a perfectly good vr just because its obd1.

the diagnostic ports aren't obd variable...only upto and inc '93 had the twin two pin plugs, '94 on had 16 pin (regardless of obd)...tho only 4 pins are actually used anyway.
