binliner 0
Went to look at a 95 N plate Highline... 3 door black and apart from paint being tatty in places (not a problem to sort) it was perfect but was an obd1 engine had early side repeaters and early boot trim (ie not fully carpeted or platic trimmed) so a bit of a crossover carQuestion is are there any real probs to look out for on an obd1 engine and is it less reliable than an obd2? Id appreciate some honest opinions please
mark@vagworx 0
Had no problems with mine. Thought all Highlines would have OBD2 lumps though....weird.
Eat this 2
i was positive all highlines were obd2 have ya looked in the engine bay and seen the log book?
six appeal 53
I was almost positive that all Highlines where OBD2, but been wrong before and no doubt I will be again! From what I've read off of the forums Justin, the main advantage of the OBD2 is a better diagnostic plug in port, and possibly more durable timing chain parts? binliner 0
I was sure all highlines were obd2 as well do was quite surprised but I think the changover was 96 so there appears to be a few early registered N plate cars that are obd1 but please lets not turn this into a when did the changover happen discussion!I'll get a price for changing the chain tensioners... obd2 has more sensors doesnt it and no isv but do these things make any difference to everyday running? six appeal 53
I know the ISV's can be a little problematic, and often require a good clean out with an alcohol based cleaner or similar. My only concern would be why it was changed at all? VW wouldn't have changed it unless they needed to improve on it?
binliner 0
I get the feeling obd2 is a bit more modern and refined but just wondered how much difference if any I would notice in the real world on a day to day basis ie is it a reason not to buy the car? Bampson 0
i have had no majior probs with my obd1 (that i didnt cause)... ;-)
six appeal 53
Well when I bought mine I had no idea there was a difference and from what I've heard on a day to day basis there is little difference if any? What did it drive like? Did it feel as quick/smooth etc...?
binliner 0
drove fine... I didnt really get a chance to give it a good blast as we got pulled over literally about 100 metres up the road for a random check!! kinda felt it would be tempting fate to go over the speed limit after that
VR6Rich 3
I suspect OBD2 mods were mainly to do with emissions controls, as has been said more sensors and better control with improved throttle body. Mainly for the american market I think as they are hotter on there emissions over there.
Slim 0
Strange, I've got a '95 Highline, it's an OBD2.
binliner 0
does it have oval side repeaters as well?
acf8181 0
you sure it was deffo a highline (did you check the log book)? could have just been same spec.only downside of obd1 is that they tend to wear out the top 'blade' runner at 100k ish. i suppose a theoretical upside is that theres less sensors so less to go wrong?!if its a good car then buy it. binliner 0
yeah it is a highline... I think you'd have to be quite dedicated anyway to create an exact replica
Slim 0
does it have oval side repeaters as well?Yeah, oval side repeaters as well.
RALA 0
I have always been under the impression that OBd2 Has around 20BHP more than OBD1? Mine is atandard OBD2 and a stealth was running 196BHP, and a OBD1 with mods, Chip, BMC, Exhast was running 189.
binliner 0
To try and close that can of worms up.... I've been at Stealth with my OBD2 highline and got 195 bhp while an obd1 car with similar mods got 210bhp
dubloke 4
that'll have been me then! <...
cliveyp 0
Nothing wrong with OBD1's on a day to day basis, although, again, i thought all Highlines were OBD2......Anyway, like has been said, the ISV could need a flush out sometime but otherwise i have noticed next to no differences between the MK3 and the Corrado lump. Although the Corrado was OBD1 it had an OBD2 style diagnostic port, maybe the Golf would be the same...???
acf8181 0
yeah, no point not getting a perfectly good vr just because its obd1.the diagnostic ports aren't obd variable...only upto and inc '93 had the twin two pin plugs, '94 on had 16 pin (regardless of obd)...tho only 4 pins are actually used anyway.
