jonnyedinburgh 0
Please help! My VR6 has got to a really bad state. Over the past few weeks it started stalling when putting the clutch in, only occasionally, but a bit scary when changing gear at 30mph! Has steadily got worse, now once the engine has got warm it stalls constantly unless you keep reving the engine, acceleration is very rough and slow, this car sounds bad! Garage told me it was g28 engine speed sensor, checked out a few sites which reckon it sounds more like crankshaft position sender (others with g28 sensor problem can't start engine, mine starts fine, just stalls and runs rough). Had a quote for parts and labour, don't mind paying to remedy as long as diagnosis is correct..... what do you think this is? Garage used OBD to diagnose.....
mickelson 0
As soon as i read your symptoms i thought it would be the crankshaft position sensor. Unsure of its location on the VR but it sounds like a safe bet. If you have had a VAG -COM check or similar then I would go with it.
VR6Pete 1,455
isnt it somehwere behind the coil pack?
acf8181 0
nah, thats the hall sender pete.crank sensor is on front of block isn't it? i've only changed one on a gti.did the garage to a diagnostics check? if so, believe what they said. if not, get it done to be 100% sure...always is the best idea on these vr's as i've learnt form bitter experience. MarkVRsix 0
I didnt drive my car for 2 weeks cos the tax was up. When I got back to driving it it was rough on idle and had to rev it to 2k to get it to pull away. It was running hot, burning fuel and underpowered. Turned out to be the coil pack.Mark[ Edited Thu Jan 06 2005, 02:00AM ]
jonnyedinburgh 0
Hi Mark,Did your motor also stall and idle erratically? Did you get an OBD code telling you the engine speed sensor had a fault? How did you work out it was the coil pack? I had the coil pack replaced when I got the car 2 years ago, hope it aint that again.Cheers
MarkVRsix 0
Not exactly, it was more like misfire symptoms as it was running on 4cyls. It was idling about the same level as normal, but the exhaust sounded a bit blowy and deeper than normal. I took it to the garage my dad goes to, exlplained it to them and he said it sounds like the coilpack. I left it with them and said it was and now its running sweet. I couldnt tell you what the fault was I'm afriad cos I didnt check it myself.Mark
mickelson 0
isnt it somehwere behind the coil pack?i know that the camshaft sensor sits by the coilpack, does this also act like a hall sender that used to be in dizzys?(OBD1 i think has it) I am sure that this sensor tells the ECU of the TDC position for CYL 1. If so, there may not be a crankshaft sensor. That said, the Bently manual shows an RPM sensor G28 down the front of the block. so maybe thats it.
jonnyedinburgh 0
Okay doakey.... problem solved (eventually!!!!). Car was taken into Autowerke in Edinburgh, originally diagnosed G28 sensor problem. Also asked them to fix a nosie coming from the rear brakes and to sort sloppy gear linkage problem. Was quoted £78 for linkage parts plus labour, called to find out how Auotwerke were getting on, only to be told that they had ordered the wrong parts for the gear linkage... correct parts would actually be £250 and oh, by the way, we just went ahead and ordered the parts and fitted them. They also said the stalling was being caused by a faulty fuel pressure regualtor, so I ok'd getting that replaced. Next day regualtor was fitted... didn't solve problem. So they carried out more tests and said the fuel pump and housing needed replacing too - extra £200. I collected car next day, drove 3 miles before it stalled. Called Autowerke who advised me to fill the tank with petrol as it was low (?!), so i put half a tank in... car stalled , engine was rough all the way back to Autowerke, had to keep revving the engine to stop it stalling. 2 days later I'm told the problem is solved.... they have replaced engine speed sender and also ecu relay. I paid for all work carried out except the speed sender and relay and labour involved in replacing those parts.... £873 to fix gear linkage, caliper noise and stalling/rough idle. Do you think I am being unreaonable when I think I've been treated unfairly? I've been charged £180 more for gear linkage parts than i was quoted (i wouldn't have paid the extra as I've had the car 2 years with sloppy gear change and i've got tax, mot and insurance this month!), the caliper still makes a noise and i've now got a new fuel pump and pressure regualtor which didn't solve the problem. They still want me to pay for the speed sender (called hall sender on box - part number 021 906 433 A) next month when i get paid. I'm inclined not to... where do i stand legally and what would you guys do? I've explained i'm not happy, now i've had a day to not get stressed about what theyre doin to my car I think i should tell em that I'll get the caliper replaced elsewhere and the cost of the sender will cover all the hassle and the extra cost of the linkage which i didn't authorise them to replace. They said the linkage was replaced without my authorisation due to a 'communication error' between their staff! At least i've got my car back and it is running sweet... except for the caliper noise. Sorry if this is a long thread but I couldn't really make it much shorter!your thoughts n comments would be mucho appreciated!

badboyV6 4
Mate, that isseriuosly taking the piss!!!!! I would be going fecking nuts if i had spent that ammount of money for parts that werent needed!!!!! Most garages who cant tell what the fault is will replace whatever they think it is and bill you later saying it was needed, however you drove it away each time and yet it was the same. I would seriuosly consider asking for your money back with your old parts fitted, or going to the small claims court!!!!!
jonnyedinburgh 0
That's exactly what my girl said, she was getting more annoyed than me! I did check with 2 main dealers while mine was in at Autowerke, both said if i brought my car in for servicing they would know what was wrong and tell me the correct cost before doing any work... even i could go round replacing bits of my car until i've eventually got it right! bit pricey way of solving problems tho! Unless you run a garage called Autowerke and expect the customer to pay! ~
acf8181 0
god no....this brings back memory's of when i got screwed. for starters i'm pretty sure they cannot charge you more for the linkeage...they quoted a price, they have to stick to that. and from what i can work out there was nothing wrong with the fuel pump and regulator, so they really shouldn't be charging you for those (they could put your old ones back on even). EDIT - just realised that you've said what they refered to as engine speed sensor is in fact the hall sender, this will not have caused stalling or poor idling, i had the same prob on my car.i'm not sure what the g28 sensor is? is it in fact the engine speed sensor? i presume they checked diagnostics to confirm it is that? but that will throw up a fault code anyway if they tested it with the engine off, so i'd be inclined to believe there was nothing wrong with engine speed sensor going on their workmanship so far. i suspect the stalling was actually the ecu relay...which costs £12 and is plug out plug in.i'm gonna hunt for a site i found which shoudl give you the answers to whether you have a case. one sec.[ Edited Fri Jan 21 2005, 02:24PM ]
acf8181 0
try this site - http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/glos/veh_link.htmsounds like another garage that doesn't know vr6's, they're a little different to other cars. they need a specialist.
badboyV6 4
Thats really angered me too mate. I hate garages that try to rip you off for their incompetent skills- I dont mind spending money on getting my car sorted. But to put it another way you shouldnt be paying for someone to keep guessing the problem and getting you to pay the price. You should pay them to diagnose and fix the fault accurately. And to let you drive the car away running like a bag of sh*te adds insilt to injury. Makes me think they didnt even road test it!!!

Can other garages diagnostic test as well..
jonnyedinburgh 0
Thanks for your comments guys... Autowerke are 'Bosch Specialists', their building is clad in huge signs and their staff all wear bosch gear! The owner, Michael, said that he wouldn't charge me for the labour involved in diagnosing the fault which led to replacing the hall sender. I checked part no with VW, they said the part replaced (hall sender) should go into front of engine block, which means it is the engine speed sensor. I have old part and the replacement part box, which is where i got the part number from. They claim the engine speed sender was replaced, the box has a part number which according to EKTA is for the front of engine, yet the box also refers to it's contents as 'HALL SENDER'. I'm gonna compare old part to new tomorrow, if I've been bullsh*tted any more i'm gona be mad! I'm gona contact trading standards cos if i've been ripped off i want my dosh back!!! x)
acf8181 0
ok, so it is the engine speed sensor...i fear they've checked the fault codes without the engine on and thought there was actually a fault with it when there was, you might wanna enquire if they checked the diagnostics with the engine off or on? jonnyedinburgh 0
Spoke to Neil at Autowerke this morning to complain about the caliper, basically getting nowhere with him. I asked AW to investigate caliper noise, they charge me £50 quid to check a slider then I get car back to find out the noise is still there! Don't know if they checked sensor ault with ignition on or off, though when they did eventully rplace the sensor it sorted fault. But i aint paying for the sensor as the attitude from them and lame excuses is ridiculous. I'll never use them again and recommend nobody else does!

Corr28VR6 0
Thats a bad one mate. They are taking the Piss - for a start if there is a big variance in the original quote then I would imagine that they are obligated to seek your approval before going ahead with the job. I'd maybe speak to Citizens advice and see what they say. I'm in Edinburgh as well and have in the past thought about using Autowerke - I don't think I'll bother now.
