ebmurray 0
Hi, just had my MOT done and the car failed because of excess movement in the steering! :? They are getting back to me tomorrow with the full story, but just wondered if anyone has come across this b4? Cheers.
acf8181 0
yep, mine failed on it last year he wheel would wobble...was the top bearing (by the ignition switch)...only about £25 for the whole housing, and about an hours labour.its very common on all mk of golfs. malcolm 0
Just had mine checked out and there is play in the steering, garage advised its the rack which garage says will fail next MOT, not drastic yet but will require new steering rack
VRVIRGIN 0
Mines been like that for over a year now, sure it helped in the loss of control of the car. Any idea on how much a steering rack costs from VW?
VR6Pete 1,455
not far off 300 quid mate! I had to buy a new rack, knuckles, now i need to do the top bearing! I ended up playing the GSF roulet and got mine from there, Stealth Racing installed it all, i think it worked out at less than half the price of the rack it's self from VW!So glad I had it done, the car had the tendency of drifting side to side as well as exesive play in the rack! Eat this 2
eeeeeeek not good
acf8181 0
i have seen PAS quick racks available for the mkIII golf before
VRVIRGIN 0
Cheers Pete, omg thats pricey. Need to have it checked out anyway, hopefully it could just be top bearing. Had the steering working correctly after having the tracking/alignment done last Feb only for it to go pear shaped again. Fingers crossed. Them quick racks expensive? More to the point, are they worth it? Keep my fingers crossed for now.
acf8181 0
well....by play in the steering do you mean the steering wheel wobbles? or if you turn the wheel is there kind of a 'slack' bit before it actually turns the wheel?
VRVIRGIN 0
Got the slackness in the steering, makes the car unsteady. Steering wheel spokes are not dead straight, can't remember which way the turn to, think it's to the right.
acf8181 0
if its slackness in the steering its most likely the rack then. don't worry about the wheel being off ecntre, thats easy to sort, you can take it off and move it round a few notches.
ebmurray 0
Mine ended up being the off side tie rod, there is a ball joint at one end and it was this that had worn!!Cost me £80 for the part and about £50 in labour.Least it's passed the MOT now tho!! VRVIRGIN 0
What I don't get, is if it is the rack needs replacing, then howcome it was temporaraly sorted by the lads who did my tracking? Gonna find out soon enough what it is. Cheers for the response guys.
acf8181 0
ooh, yeah, could be tie rod....and that would tie in (excuse pun) with what you've just said VRVIRGIN.
acf8181 0
this is the bearing that wore on mine - http://www.mk2golf.co.uk/dash/column_position.jpg - i just replaced the whole thing, much easier and not pricey.
ni-golf 0
mine just failed this morn on excessive movement..the steering wheel actually comes forward a bit if you pull it towards you and a bit of a rattle if you turn the wheel quickly, I dont notice and slackness though when actually steering. Ideas?
Big P 1
Mine had this problem, on the picture that acf818 has posted that assembley is held on buy a sheer bolt, it had come loss so i got a new one from vw for a couple of quid, when you tighten it up you keep going until the bolt bit breaks off, i had to change the hole assembly in the picture but couldn't get the splined bit off the rack, will be trying that again soon, check that sheer bolt mate, opposite side to the ignition barrelPaul
