golf vr6 cv joints

ok i replaced my inner cv joint the other day and i manged to pull the driveshaft out of the outer cv joint, all i want to ask is if anyones done a outer cv joint is they a clip to hold the axle in place or does it just slid in and sit in place, i took the whole outer cv apart looking for remains of this clip i think is ment to be there but i found nothing so i thought i would try asking some people who might know :-p
