well here we are again. third vr6 this year!!!!

some people may remember my old thread where i went from this

1400076-3.jpg

to this

paint.jpg

and now to this

SDC10981-1-1.jpg

think I have trouble making my mind up!

luckily ive been able to to sell the others fairly quickly so i can move onto the next project reasonably quickly.

Few problem areas with the car i wanted to work on before puting it on the road.

rusty arches. just infront of the wheel its bubbling. (i actually machine polished the rear quarter as there was a bird dropping scar. came out nicely. best looking part of the car at the moment!

IMAG0141.jpg

worst at the bottom of the fronts. obviously stone chip damage has progressed and started to eat the metal. not good.

SDC11959.jpg

as i was bored i broke out the air tools. ground back to bare metal. bit of kurust and primer and they looked like this

IMAG0148.jpg

at this point i thought i was on a roll and fancied having a go at some paintwork. but then my friend pointed out i had a far worse problem...... so i sprayed the area with some black paint to keep the weather off as i knew it would need a bodyshop to save this project and took some photos of possibly the worst panel prep ive ever seen.........

one at the back of the skirt

IMAG0152.jpg

and another at the front

IMAG0153.jpg

and repeat for the other side!!!!!

that makes 4 holes in total. fuck me. what were vw thinking when they let these cars out of the factory? shame i didnt look there when i bought the car or it may still be with the previous owner or a much cheaper purchase!!

only needed a push with a finger and the skirt went straight through

air tools out again and i cut away the crap parts of the panels

IMAG0154.jpg

IMAG0155.jpg

was planning on geting the car into my mates garage and welding in some plates.

which was all well and good until i jacked the car up today and ran straight into another nightmare...... the jacking points are completely corroded and just crumpled under the weight of the car. luckily got the car down before the whole thing gave way. no pictures yet but its not good.

as well as welding plates in the skirts the sills/jacking points are going to need a complete overhaul as an m.o.t is going to be a joke right now.

so ive still only driven it once, and what seemed like a little paint and maybe a chain service has turned out to be one of the worst cars ive ever bought. Not sure i can bring myself to sell it as i like it too much and im itching to drive it again. just a shame it needs so much work.

:( :(

Propa gutted to see this mate. Looks like a real mission you have on your hands there, i just hope you can get it sorted quickly and cheaply.

Bryn did complete seals too... Might work out easier to do that. :S at least you're getting it sorted though and not giving up, its nice to see. :)

Good luck.

mk3 are notorious for this also while you are poking around pull out the front arch liners as all the dirt sits at the bottom of the wing and starts rusting the bottom of the wings and corrodeds the front of the sills and floor pan also check front and back floor grommets as they corrode around there aswell just in case

dropped the car off at the garage and the guys recommended a complete sill replacement. better to be safe than sorry they say. will reduce the need for any further work in the future and wont cost a lost more in labour anyway. so give it a few weeks and I should have it back ready for the bodyshop, or freshly painted from the bodyshop. fingers crossed.

  • 1 month later...

its been over a month now since ive seen the car, but some progress at last. with the rot problem i really had thought about giving up. booked it into a garage and they took on the job but they were a little busy.

so as it stood... jacking points rottern, sills rottern

garage proposed replacing entire sills, fabricating all 4 jacking points and new membranes

picked it up today and it looks so much better than before

pic up tomorrow of finished work but here are whats left of the old jacking points

IMAG0228.jpg

they are completely gone, no wonder it wouldnt hold the weight of the car! sills were starting to go in a few more places so glad i bought new ones. just annyed it took so long.

pics of the new sills on, as promised. its appears to be a good job. fully zinc primed to help fend off future corrosion. the new jacking points are sweet as well. no more rust which is a relief. just needs to be smoothed by a bodyshop and sprayed. then going back to the garage where they are waxoyling the inide of the sills

here are a few pics of the work and a shot of how its sitting currently (looking a little sorry for itself)

£360 all in. That was supply and fit new sills (£30 each) fabricate new jacking points, zinc primered and waxoyl treated. think that is probably a bargain. not sure if its special rates as im such a good customer but a good price none the less.

ahh thats not as bad as i was thinking then. i have rust on the bck and when someone came to view the car off of the person i brought it off he slammed the jack into the sill so i have a flat spot my mate did tell him its low but hey some people cant be told lol

good price for full new sills and jacking points, mines had the same done to it aswell as both rear arches, and as like other people said new sections of floor and the body bung holes on the floor corroded out. downer to find but when the works complete an awesome feeling isnt it

yea is a good price. would have been better if i didnt have to wait 4 weeks for it to be done! had a lot of waiting and had to be very patient with this project as people ive approached for work just havent seen any sense of urgency when i tell them it needs to be done asap. but should have a nice fat update tuesday/wednesday as ive been promised the car will be out of the bodyshop then. finally!

never got round to taking photos of the new sills and jacking points. so here are a few

IMAG0265.jpg

armour plated jacking points!!

IMAG0268.jpg

nice clear drain holes

IMAG0266.jpg

the sills are so good now i can basically jack the car up anywhere i like

been a busy week. with work/working on the car/driving it

I picked the car up wednesday evening and straight away fitted my scabby 928's so the stupid A3 spec profile tyres didnt rub my paint off.

IMAG0252.jpg

here are a few close ups of the finish. Its a pretty good job. always reluctant trying a new bodyshop out but im happy with the work on it. I had two new front wings put on as there was too much corrosion at the bottom and paint was flaking on the edges where it had wide wheels on it.. The rear quarters have been repainted (windows out) with all the rust creep cleaned out. The doors and new skirts have also bee repainted along with the door steps. So basically had both sides done.

IMAG0253.jpg

IMAG0254.jpg

IMAG0255.jpg

IMAG0272.jpg

just needs a good mop to finish the new paint off and to bring the old panels up to scratch and it'll look really good.

also had time to get the polisher out and attack a horible rotary scar on the bonnet

I stupidly didnt take a pic of the bonnet before but it was very hazy however you looked at it. looked like the buffer had got away from someone, the scar was about 2ft long.

IMAG0271.jpg

bumpers are the worst for this. they seem to be a little dull. almost like there hasnt been any polish or wax at all on them. they are like 2000 grit wet/or/dry when you run your hand over them. so I gave the front bumper a polish and a few coats of glaze/wax

you can just make out what i mean

before

after

  • 3 weeks later...

quick update. been a painful few weeks of ownership as a few niggles have decided to appear.

had all the heatshields from the cat back close to falling off as the star washers holding them on had rotten. so i bought some new ones and hammered them back in place. the suspension, as you've prob read is a nightmare. almost certainly got fucked top mounts, wishbone bushes and rear mounts (if there are any?! something is still knocking back there) and the car managed to fail its first m.o.t with me last week.

after spending hours trying to trace bad earths/connections around the car with only 3 out of 6 indicators working properly i eventually got it sorted the night before. which turned out to be the least of my worries

IMAG0342.jpg

fingers crossed this is a better week...............
