zooptee 0
I've always had VW do my servicing, but I want to do my own now. I have a 94"L" VR6 and need to know if I need any special tools to remove the spark plugs. Is it straightforward enough, or is it a nightmare? Also, any spark plug recommendations are welcome. Thanks in advance... ?!
Geastb 0
You'll need the plug lead removal tool - should be attached to your bonnet stay! I use the 4 prong bosch plugs - seem to work fine!
cliveyp 0
Like he's said, you need the plastic lead removal tool off the bonnet stay. If yours isn't there, i believe you can get a metal alternative for about £20. I also found that the front centre and far right plugs were not accessible with a plug socket (it wouldn't fit though the whole in the manifold) so i bought a tube style wrench from Halfords for about a fiver that fits lovely. As for the plugs, VAG use NGK BRK5EKU and they sell them for about 3.50 each + vat (i think) and the Bosch FR8LDC are also suitable (that's what i've got in mine) and they were £22 for the 6 delivered from GSF. vdubgirl 3
Think snap on make a good alternative spark plug removal tool if you don't have one
B6MFD 0
can i not get the leads off without one of the tools?
Mr_GTI 0
you can try but you'll prob break the lead, the fit onto the plugs is so good if you try and pull them off using just the lead 9-10 times it will snap the lead or leave the end still on the plug.
B6MFD 0
iv got new leads so this wont matter. Unless i wont be able to get the plugs out due to the lead being stuck to it?
Mr_GTI 0
you've got the idea, worth spending the £20 really, I had to get one. GSF do draper ones which are metal and seem pretty good
purple highline monster 0
yep get a metal one, the plastic ones are fine when new and only used a couple of times! then when the cars been around a while the leads "weld" on it seems! really hard to budge em.... its like trying to get a Gypsy out of a lay bye
