VeedubVR 0
Got a slight rattle coming from the chains. It isn't very loud ( the bonnet has to be up to hear it and rev'd to 1200rpm. The car is a '97 with 120k. It still pulls strong and doesn't feel down on power but is smoking slightly on overrun. Do they need doing asap or have I got a while on them? I've been quoted from 1 garage 450 inc parts to get done. Good price? What other parts is worth doing while chains are getting done?Is it worth repairing this engine or getting a different engine? Vr, 4mo etc....?Thanks
DanH 1
chains wouldn't make it smoke.......could be followers rattling-think chains last bit longer than that, especially on obd2. crankshaft oil seal and clutch always good to replace while u there if u want.£450 is VERY cheap, think vw quote over a grand. check they use genuine parts cos thats all u should ever use when doing stuff like that
craggsy 91
It does seem cheap as the parts from VW are about £200-£250 alone
VeedubVR 0
I know chanis wouldnt make it smoke, possibly something to do with the head with it being on over run? But while the engine is taken apart would it be worth getting valve stems etc... done?Expensive to get a clutch and and crankshaft oil seal done? The garage thats from has done the chains on his own VR (not a golf.... galaxy) Its sounding very costly that why I thought about either a full replacedment VR, or 4mo (would he 4mo just simply bolt in and go or are the looms different?) Special K 81 0
Im experiencing similar rattle,no smoke. Put a thread up,...response has been chains, tensioners etc cost a few hundred alone, hen you need clutch to...as danh said your going to whan OE parts. You dont want to be dishing out cash again in the not too distant future...the guys on here know only to well when not to save on parts in certian area's. I was told in general a garage will charge 1 - 1 1/2k to do,alot of labour. Is that quote definately with parts included?? and not labour + parts to be bought??
DanH 1
all i was thinking was its smoking because its been run on old/manky/not enough oil. if thats so could make for rattling followers cos they not filling with oil properly. that would save cost of the chains....tbh tho ur getting near time to change ur chains anyways so worth inspection. wot u do depends on wot u want in long run...... eg if u wanna turbo it one day jus rebuild that engine cos 12v's a tank and easy to extract power from! VeedubVR 0
Oil does get changed regularly. Last change was about 1k ago. For whats its going to cost for changes and maybe a head rebuilt, you can get a 4mo engine and maybe a mk4 R32. But im not sure if you cang et away with same VR loom etc.... Ive had the car for a few months now, it did have a few problems when I first bought it but the more its driven it seems to be getting better. I am planning on keeping the VR. Its going in for a full respray ready for edition. I would love to turbo it but thats alot of money and insurance would definately laugh at me. Ive been using genuine parts when Ive had to replace stuff on the golf so far. are the parts from TPS and VW the same or best to stick the the stealers?Im no good when it comes to the mechanical stuff but I dont just want anyone to work on it. DanH 1
go for chains then.....not sure on managment on 24v swap......TPS are vw so ur good using them

vr6stormt 0
hi mateit sounds like valve stem oil seals ive just overhauled my engine it had the double chain on the bottom and i single up top but you can upgrade to the double and it cost a grand from TPS to do the full monty plus £250 to get the head done and done all the labour with a couple of other members VW wanted £1000 just for chains and head gasket but like others say its not worth skimping on these parts and it will be good for another hundred thou
VeedubVR 0
So in parts alone from TPS it cost 1k? Got a list of parts you replaced?
vr6stormt 0
everything except bottom part of engine and pistons
Gazbarber1982 3
I did mine 3 months ago. All chains, guides, tensioners, gaskets, seals, headbolts, fly wheel bolts and oil resistant silicone sealant (All from TPS and original parts) totaled around £600. £15 premium membership saved me £375 approx. off the total. It cost me £1100 in total for all parts, oils, head skim, pressure test and labour but the car is fantabulous now. 273bhp @ stage 1 supercharged.
VeedubVR 0
Time to become a premium member.

VeedubVR 0
The garage quoted me 530 for non gen parts inc labour and 600 for gen parts.
DanH 1
2 chains - £42(each)main tensioner £30guides - £49 for 4 guides)1 sprocket £11.50Anything else?yea 2 chains (double row on obd1 and single for obd2) but 4 guides and 1 tensioner??? isnt it - 2 guides, 1 tensioner, 1 tensioner rail+tensioner bolt? wots the sprocket for? crankshaft oil seal and clutch gd to replace
Gazbarber1982 3
2 guide rails, tensioner bolt, tensioner rail, head gasket, exhaust gaskets, inlet manifold gasket (lower), head bolts, cam cover gasket, oil resistant silicone sealant, fly wheel bolts (there stretch bolts as well as head bolts) stem seals good to change too whilst its off. You sholdn't need any sprokets unless they are worn which is unlikely. Ive got copies of all the part numbers for everything your car needs if it's double chain. Mine is Oct 96 double chain below engine number 217000 and is original engine.
VeedubVR 0
yea 2 chains (double row on obd1 and single for obd2) but 4 guides and 1 tensioner??? isnt it - 2 guides' date=' 1 tensioner, 1 tensioner rail+tensioner bolt? wots the sprocket for? crankshaft oil seal and clutch gd to replace[/quote']Thats just what the guy said I would need who worked at TPS. But the garage im taking my car to whos doing the work is ordering the pats, £600 all in for gen parts, sound good? While everything is stripped he's going to look round see what else needs replacing. Gaz part numbers would be good mate. Expensive job to do stem seals?
