Handbrake light

Hi

When driving my vr around some times the handbrake light comes on randomly.

Whats the problem?

first check your brake fluid level

Thanks Luke it was the brake fluid level, was a bit low so toppped it up with dot 4, and what do you know the handbrake light has gone off. lol.

Also for argument sake if it was not my brake fluid level being low what else could it be?

could have been as simple as the handbrake switch, could have been that your pads are very low, could be that your system has developed a leak, either a connection or a seal or your master cylinder. if it doesnt come on again then fine, if it does and its your fluid level again get it looked at

could be abs sensors too!

handbrake switch is under/side of handbrake..............

remove rear ashtray to access 2 screws to remove plastic handbrake cover!

New discs and pads have gone on all round and brake fluid change last week but the handbrake light still comes on? *-)

It is more than likely pointing to an abs fault. Need to get it on vagcom

To be honest i took the hand brake area apart had a little look messed about with it and then just put it back together, wasn't 2 sure what i was meant to be looking 4 lol

On the other hand my abs light has been on from day one since i have had the car, and then after a few months thats when the hand brake light randomly comes on and off???

Might have to get it vag com - any one close by to me??

the switch is literally a little push switch that the handbrake handle presses when you ratchet it on, under the centre console plastic surround

did you check that the level in the brake fluid resivour is not pushed down! you must not push it down ,

on the resivor bottle there is a little plunger that sits inside the bottle , it must not be pushed down , so i would unscrew the top as if you were going to fill up the brake fluid , on the inside of the cap , push the plunger out and refit cap , and that might get rid of your handbrake light , the little plunger must not be pushed down as your car will think it needs brake fluid which causes the hand brake light to come on

No i didnt mate, but i am looking into it this week going to change x4 abs sensors first, vag com it and take it from there. I dont thing it is my handbrake switch because wen i start my car in the morning it is fine, push handbrake down light goes out, as soon as i get to my first speed bump, go over it and handbrake light goes on.

i had the same problem with my vr , and what's Lukey said it's true , i checked my brake fluid level and it was a bit low , i put a bit more and the light turned off.

Yep mine was the same thing at first, topped up brake fluid and everything was okay for about 2 days, n then the light came back on, and since then has never gone off. :-(

I have just noticed the purple plunger is up on my reservoir bottle, when the handbrake is on, from the above am I take it this is normal? The handbrake light does not stay on.
