settle an arguement

I was having a heated debate with a guy at work an wondered if someone could settle it for me?

I said I thought my fuel punp never worked on my car before it went off the road, to which he replied don't be so ****ing stupid a car won't run without your fuel pump. I explained the longer i left it before starting the more turns it took to start, thinking the extra turns would be drawing the fuel to the engine.

Anyway you get the idea, it went on for a while an got a bit heated. Have i just made an ass of myself? Or will a car run without a functioning fuel pump?

I am fairly sure a car requires a fuel pump. How else would you pump the fuel from the tank to the engine ? It doesn't suck it you know :-)

Well i thought as long as the injectors were working the fuel would be pulled through due to displacement. However after the arguement i sat an thought about it and started doubting my theory. The thing is I never heard the pump run either

You probably wouldnt hear it over the vr lump, sometimes when you turn ignition on you will hear pump before you crank it over.

I have a mondao just now an thats really obvious when it goes on an the exhauast is burst at the manifold, but that thing s a pile o crap right enough

another option is you tell him you car runs on a vac pump which is a plunger and a 1 way valve. think bicycle pump, these were fitted to old ford engine's. you'll never hear one of these running lol
