rsweeney 40
the car is a Golf VR6 auto 1994 , and has had gearbox problems, however i started the car a few weeks ago and noticed a noise coming from the engine bay. It is a spinning , high pitched noise that gets faster when you accelerate , it is worst in neutral when you get past 1500 rpm ? any help would be appreciated as the car has only done 62000 miles and the gearbox looks to be giving up :-(

rsweeney 40
its leaking quite a lot of atf between the gearbox and engineso i thought it might be linked to that ?
rsweeney 40
i managed to have a quick look at the flywheel today by removing the cover between the gearbox and engine block and no signs of damage. Where abouts on the gearbox is the pump and filter? and i was told that it might be the timing chain on its way out but any tips on how to check ? cheers for the help
b road blaster 0
timing chain normaly rattles not squels sorry can't help as to the filter as never had a auto box matebut from what i can see on google its seem that some are 3 speed and have a fiter and the others are sealed for life not teaching you how to suck eggs but you did check the oil level with it runing and oil nice n warm
rsweeney 40
thats good it rules out the timing chain and yeah ive kept a close eye on the levels cause of the leak. its leaking between the gearbox and engine , is there a gasket between the two or is it going to be something else ? im doing some work on the gearbox itself and it would be nice to stop the leaking at the same time
b road blaster 0
sorry i really don't know mate i just done a google for vw mk3 vr6 auto gearbox oil filter might be worth doing the same but for pics and see if it shows how they mount to the engine ?? do you have acsess to a vag com it might throw up some codes which might point you in the right direction
rsweeney 40
i dont but i had the codes read not too long ago cause the auto box was playing up and all the codes pointed to the internall harness - which im doing when i have some free time... and money. but ill type it into google like you said and see what it comes up with. thanks for the help
