23345matt 0
Hi guys, just bought my first vr6got it home and after a few days have noticed what i would say is a tapping noise coming from the top of the engine on the drivers side can anyone give me a clue, i thought it was just tappets? or do all the earlier ones do thisThe dub is a 1994 golf vr6 with 48000miles on the clock, it has been stood for a while un-used but was serviced whilst not in use. Engine oil is very clean, plugs all good, i know that they are suspect for timing rails but did not think that would start for a few more thousand miles yet.Any ideas would be appreciated
keo87 0
the belt could b scrubbing on the engine block, thats the belt next the air box that runs all the ancilliries sometimes it touches the block a little bit. worth a look.
cabrioman 6
sounds like you got a dry tappet mate if its been standing for a long time and not drives strating is ok but needs to be driven to get the oil flowing around ... if it dont go after a long ish drive try changing the oil again and put the correct grade in it mate ... cabrioman 6
a chain rattle will come from the gearbox side as thats where the chains are between the engine and gearbox ....
23345matt 0
cheers for that, was going to flush the engine but have heard that its a bad idea on the these i thought it could be something sticking like a valve
cabrioman 6
more likely to be a tappet mate if its been standing a long time the oil has prob drained out of it ....
