VR6 ENGINES AT HIGH MILEAGES

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

A silly question. My car has limited service history and has over 153000 on the clock. I just want to know if this is considered high mileage on this vehicle. Over the next year or so, I will be throwing money at it (cams, chip, exhaust, coilies, respray) and just wanted to know if its worth me spending the money or buying another VR.

The exhaust is blowing at the moment and when it was all serviced i managed to get 34 mpg out of on the motorway - i have been told that vr6's can give up to 37 but I find this hard to believe.

There are pleanty of people with higher milage than that on here. The car is not a highly stressed car so big miles are no problems.. The main thing is oil changes and chains.. as long as they're done as and when needed then the car should keep going... 34mpg on a run is very good... some people never see that...

That said... If you want to get a newer/lower milage car then hey.. why not find one off here or one all kitted out with all the options ... Depends what your plan is overall.

As long as the engine has been looked after and at least had the chains, guides and tensioners done that mileage is fine. I rebuilt mine at about 130k and it looked almost brand new inside although all the tensioners had seen better days so needed replacing.

I know people with 200k+ vr6's still running strong and mine on my way to work usually says 35mpg on the mfa, i've seen 40mpg before but that was motorway cruising at 60mph (convoying with a bus on way back from show)

my mk3 8v gti had 180k on the clock and was still going strong untill i hit the sump and couldnt see any oil leaks then carried on driving it like i stole it, then it blew up hence why i put a vr6 in the shell. but aslong as its looked after regular oil changes etc.

Mines on 200k mate and seems to be doing ok. Only problems are the ancillaries that tend to go. Ive just replaced my gearbox and a couple weeks later my alternator has gone lol. Doing really well on fuel too getting about 200 miles to 30 quid using for work. Just shows how strong they are.
