Mcdubber1 0
Hey guys,I've recently been getting a rattle from my engine on cold start up which doesn't sound great at all. I wouldn't say it is the chains, it sounds more like the engine is starved of oil the first couple of seconds on start up and dissapears within a second or two of firing up. It's pretty loud and it makes me cringe everytime i hear it so would like to get it sorted asap.Could it be the oil pump or maybe some sort of sensor needing cleaned or replaced or could it be something much worse? Thanks

Mcdubber1 0
I don't think so, i'd say it's definetly a noise from the engine itself but thanks for your input.
ashmk3 0
i would say its your lifters
Mcdubber1 0
Could be the lifters. I take it the only way to sort this is by replacing them?Providing it is the lifters what could have caused their failure?I've never heard of lifter failure on a vr6 before is it fairly uncommon? legvw 0
How many miles has your engine done?I've heard of oil pumps becoming 'weaker', and causing top end noise on start up.
Mcdubber1 0
It's done 116k.The oil pump was one of my first thoughts because it's like the engine is starved of oil for the first few seconds.Any ideahow much a new oil pump is?

Need to find receipt to work out a price thoOnce you work out a price let me know please. i'll need to get a bit more advice first though from my mate (he's a mechanic) to see if he thinks it's the pump before i was to but though. I don't want to buy it then find out it's not the pump.

Mcdubber1 0
oil flush can help with sticky / noisy lifters I flushed the engine on the last oil change which was about 5k ago and i just changed the oil again last week. Over flushing can cause damage i believe so i didn't do it this time around and don't plan doing it again in the future.

shail 0
I get that on cold days too. I just put it down to the oil being that much thicker on colder days, taking a little longer to get to the top of the engine.
