help! 93 obd1 vr6 hesitating under load and misfire

Recommended Posts

right i bought a 93 vr6 and have loved the noise non stop lol.

it started mis-firing under load and is slowly getting worse. i checked the dizzy cap and rotor arm and it looks fine, the leads look new and are clean and a tight fit. i presumed it was the coil pack (mounted on the firewall for the 7th lead to go onto)

i checked mine was mounted ok but it seems a little loose. should it be earthed out to the body? or have an earth strap to it? i found one on ebay that is apparently in perfect order but ive swapped it over this evening and under full throttle it pops and bangs and fills the street with smoke. (the seller is adamant its in perfect order although it runs worse than with my crap coil on)

mine is mounted above the heater matrix hoses and has an earth strap from the engine to it? i will re-mount this tomorrow in an attempt to make a good earth and run a nice strap to it.

if i use part throttle it will pull strong if progressively pressed down but if i plant it it just hesitates then goes then hesitates then goes.

does anyone have any ideas? new coil? wiring fault? earth fault? alternator on its way out?

i just want it sorted as its very annoying and i dont want to make things worse.

also if anyone has a bic of where the coil should be mounted stock that would be brilliant?

cheers

right ive fitted a brand new coil and ignition amplifier from euro car parts. re earthed to the block (mine uses the 7th lead to the firewall to the one coil).

still misfires

so ive unplugged the maf and it still misses under load so its not that at fault

will be checking plugs and leads over the weekend. along with the alternator...

any ideas anyone please????

It could be anything from the coil to engine.

Start at your new coil and wrok towards the engine, replacing with new parts.

Even though the dissy 'looks' ok, it may not be.

Replace the lead that goes between the coil an dissy cap, test, if no replace cap and arm test, etc.

Its got to be something along the line!

Hope that helps.

right ive taken the plugs out and they were black and a little oily. none worse than others. i cleaned in petrol and wire brushed them and refitted. i swapped my leads which were rusty inside the ends for a set off another car.

fitted it all back together and its missing real bad constantly

i pulled the leads off the dizzy one at a time while it was running and it appears that when i unplug the two rear left leads the engine note doesnt change.

there is a spark going into the lead so i have ordered a fresh set of plugs which im waiting on still and i will swap them out as its either the lead arching out or the plugs are duff.

i hope this sorts it as i want to drive the car!!

  • 1 year later...

Bit of a thread revival but did dint see the point in starting a new thread when the search brought this up and it's exactly the same problem as I'm having. Did you find the issue in the end as mine just spluttered and almost died getting to work. :(
