richgti97 0
Got stopped last night in suffolk (were i work) and the copper did a sound test on the vr.. apparently it has to be below 90db at 3/4 max revs and 82db or below at idle. Mine gave reading of 81db at idle and 98db at 4250prm. I dont think my exhaust is excessivly loud..its a full stainless system with a single oval pipe.. got a 30 quid fine and regestered on their system and if it gets tested again and fails i have to go to court! seems a bit extreme to me! richgti97 0
I spend most my time down here so guess im going to have to do something about it..annoying...!!
Ben Seabrook 4
does your system have any silencers in it or is it straight through ??
Apollo 0
May be worth looking into how he carried out the tes. As a qualified noise assessor I would be interested to know where he placed the sound meter. Noise has to be calculated at ear level or at a moderate level to take into account height variations in the human. Sticking the noise meter near the exhaust is pointless! richgti97 0
My system has the cat and then just the rear box.. He put the meter on a tripod about 8in away from exhaust.. at exhaust level not ear level.. was pretty much on the ground and right next to exhaust! took the background reading, took a reading at idle then took 3 readings at 4250rpm. CALICO 130
thats keeping suffolk safe is it obviously not busy on the crime front then lol

spadam 7
Apparently they also hand out £1000 fines for decats aswell if you fail a road side test.
legvw 0
Thats really pants. :-(What happens about the older sports cars that are loud? Because some of them are quite loud!Surely they can't start making them put extra silencers into their exhausts?

[/quote']That will obviously give you the level coming out the exhaust but will not give to a true reading at ear level. Depending on the angle of your downpipe it may also incur reverb off the ground or surrounding material. As you where pretty close to the legal limit it may be worth investing in a letter to the local plod. Ask for proof the meter has been calibrated and proof the policeman has been thoroughly trained in its use.
dman78 1
i hope they dont try this in essex....

b-a 0
Well I've got no worries mines a ss jetex system and its quieter then the standard one lol
p0u1 14
this is the problem with the english police they cant be asked to go sort out real problems like wepons and robberys instead they just want to rob the person who bought there car, paid there road tax and is earning money for england and to fuel that car they normaly get fined in. Noise has to be calculated at ear level or at a moderate level to take into account height variations in the human. Sticking the noise meter near the exhaust is pointless! You beat me to this.. What calibrated instrument did he have to demonstrate the noise meter was at least a metre away etc etc etc from memory most noise polotion levels have a specific distance(s) applied to it and if they are doing the test then their metre must be a calibrated metre (distance) if you see what I mean.. Worth checking what the SVA tests require.
The Monk 50
I have the utmost respect for the police.I do feel though that the police are becoming more pathetic.
richgti97 0
I think now i have herd what you guys have said i will get a letter sent out as the more i think about it the more unrealistic of a test it seems to put the device about a ft away from the exhaust at ground level. failing that i guess it a new system.. with another silencer in!! The police gave my gf a caution for get this assualt and battery, and they couldnt be arsed to follow up on the other girl who should have got disturbing the peace, causing affray and potentially assualt with a deadly weapon, the glass. They dont get an ounce of respect or co-operation from me.
